i was always wondering what's better: to become rich and piss away the money with glory and keep the memories - or lead a stable but medium exciting life... or is it maybe not about money anyways?
What's better: to go from poor to rich and back - or be stable but middle class?

There have been studies which have shown that, at least in America, after you make about $75,000 per year additional money affects ones happiness on average very little. Yet if one has less than that on average adding money tends to make them happier.
I think there is value from going from poor to rich because you then have different experiences to draw upon. Sometimes the rich fantasize about what it would be like to be poor and a common man. Often because they perceive it as a challenge or being more free (The grass being greener...) or that they are curious about what it would be like.
What must be worst of all is going from rich to poor. Especially when your entire self identity is tied to your having money. Some could do it easily. Others I think would be destroyed.

I went from having a LOT of money, to pissing it all away in a drunken and drugged out haze, to busting my ass and clawing my way back to where I am now. I'm by no means rich, but I am doing very well for myself and it just keeps getting better, and believe me I appreciate it all a LOT more now...Comment

I know a couple that were living in a run down mobile home, they won 5 million cash from the lottery after taxes.
They built a million dollar house in an area where the average house was 50,000. Built a $500,000 horse barn, then started buying horses "as an investment"
They didn't know anything about horses except that the wife thought they were pretty. They also gave her parents $500,000.
Within 2 years, they were dead broke, they mortgaged the house to try and keep things going and get a break in the horse biz. They were mad at her parents, because the parents would not give back the $500,000 they had been given, They were miserable.
The house and horse barn were foreclosed on, and they moved back to the mobile home. She works as a waitress at a truck stop, and he drives a truck, and they say they are happy once again.Comment

there is nothing worse than a life of mediocrity in my opinion. I am thankful for the very colorful life I have had, rich, poor and everywhere in between.

And I was going to say that as well but didn't want to come off as too abrasive and offend anyone.
There is more to life than money. Hopefully no one here will continue to see themselves entirely through their possessions for long.

The problem with some people like that is they may have no redeeming qualities about them. The money was the only reason anyone was ever interested in, or even tolerated them. I can imagine that is a long and lonely fall. Sometimes, if you study their failed finances, you'll discover that they blew a lot of money trying to impress others. They forgot to be the millionaire next door.Comment
