    Some people have no taste...

    I'll be quick with this story.

    About a year ago today, I offered to help out this adult model with her website for FREE.
    She gave me a direction and within 3 days I had the preview section of her site all worked out and online.

    The spec was simple - help her design and build a new site for FREE.

    This is the preview I made:

    Is it me, or did she make the wrong choice with her current site?

    Working with her, really made me think twice about doing anything for FREE. As a developer and designer working at a top agency - I realise that fighting with clients is unavoidable - but it really grates me when someone can't take advice when all the work being done is for FREE.

              Well that's the funny thing, she was determined to have a similar looking site to the one she already had. Some of the design choices were forced onto the design and build.

              You can see that my examples have been influenced by her taste.

                  It's her site and her choice. As long as she thanked you for your help and time without leading you on about things I can't see why you would be mad.

                                  So you're saying you were helping, but didn't really try? Ok, buddy.

                                  I stopped doing my own design stuff a few years back and now have 2 people on staff who handle it all for me.

                                  That said, I would still have no problem putting together something that might actually stand a chance of converting surfers in 2010.

                                          And this happened a year ago. It was all very friendly.

                                          The previews I made were a compromise for her requirements and taste. It's annoying when you know that the site could have been so much better.

                                          But one positive thing came out of it.
                                          It was just fun doing some porn work - rather than big name brands with a team of 20 or so.

                                                                                                                  You can have a great design with shitty content and still sell it. But then you have to have filler content like text to make up for the difference.


                                                                                                                  Surfers DO care about design. A proper design can increase conversions by insane amounts. A proper design displays that content in a professional manner that makes it sell.

                                                                                                                                  actually there are a few instances where this may not be true. if you are selling old fashioned hand made chairs in a new plastic packaging , might be better to have hand labels with no packaging.. or organic foods etc where the goal is less waste
