pretty futile, plug one hole and others open. suing an adult tube site successfully, NO settlements, getting a legal judgement against one is major. we all know adult tube sites don't meet the DMCA's definition of a 'service provider' - that should be very doable for a good legal team. but the DMCA is an American law, win a suit and they all move off shore.

defeat tube sites to any extent - nice but again meaningless unless you are collecting major damage awards because the real monster now is the file sharing operators and their affiliates running blogs and forums. that's where the former paying customers are NOT tubes. Tubes are the home of the young crowd who weren't going to pay for porn anyway. Hotfile, Filesonic, Megaupload, PornBB, PlanetSuzy, RealRapTalk, Filestube etc - that's who's killing the industry.

new technology will continue to put the pirates one step ahead of the industry.

best idea is to sue and collect damages, because piracy will never go away - it would be nice to see the courts see what we all see and know, what a real service provider is and what is a business that exists solely to make huge profits off the copyright infringements of its users/subscribers.

The fight against online piracy of porn is nothing new. It's been going on for over 15 years. Back in the mid 90s I belonged to a group led by Steve Easton called APIC. It included many top producers and publishers. Steve was trying to stop people using pirated content on Newsgroups and in paysites. Often it was only images scanned from a magazine, still piracy. Steve was fighting an uphill battle.

The idea piracy can be stemmed or stopped by fighting it directly, is wrong. It's too late and without massive worldwide Governments coming down on piracy there is no hope of stopping it. And few would welcome such intrusion.

The only way to decrease the effect of piracy is to copy the business model of the film or music industry.

The film industry has made the experience of going to the cinema to see the latest movie an enjoyable experience. A pirated movie on your TV can't replace a night out at the cinema for many.

The music industry has turned to products that the mass of free downloaders are not interested in like classical music even the pope has a CD now. And producing over night stars who come and go very quickly.

And both industries spend a lot on producing a product that's more individual and often better quality then the porn industry today.

The problem with porn is too much of the content is the same and easily produced. Getting away from that business model and then making it hard to pirate is essential.

If the cost of production is too high for an individual paysite, then paysites have to share in the cost and have semi exclusive rather than cheap easily duplicated exclusive.

Turning the tide of piracy bu legislation will not bring customers back. They will simply view free legal porn. The cost of hosting and BW is so low it's cheap enough to give content away for free. The only way is for paid porn to be far better than pirated and worth paying for.

Any niche that hasn't already been invented is so micro it's not worth the effort. It would be great if we could just all go into a new niche, if it were worth money it would soon be pirated.

No actually it's a brilliant idea. Putting the equivalent of a plastic bag around online porn would mean you have to buy it to see it.

Now what would of been totally stupid was for a porn shop to set up a private booth or stall outside the shop and give away porn scenes porn videos for free to take home or just view for free. It took idiots like you to come up with the idea of giving it away for free in the hope 1-1000 would buy.

Dumbest idea ever. How do you get traffic if you don't give the product away for free?

How did porn shops survive not giving it away for free?

I think a better question to ask is if the same strategies used over the past 5 years by many companies where very little anti-piracy efforts were done worked?

As far as the other suggestions and comments, I want to be clear that our anti-piracy efforts are not geared towards turning the clock back 5 to 10 years. That's not reasonable and we all know the market and the consumer has changed. Of course companies have to be creative and modify their business to work in the given market and with the existing consumer. We obviously won't be giving out our business plans publicly, yet we do feel confident in our business direction as a company. Anti-piracy efforts still have a worthwhile impact on our business, but is not the core of our business.

To sum it up, good business practices and anti-piracy efforts are not mutually exclusive, but rather extremely complimentary.

Where's the proof this company is completely scanning "100K sites"? Why are there no haters in google if they are so effective? Why are they not listed in Chillingeffects? The programmers I have talked to have called BS on this already.

I realize they are your competitor so you're skeptical and I can only provide feedback as a client. First, actually I will state that that 100k note was a place-holder number we did not update (our mistake), not the number provided by Degban. We've been an active client for about 1 month and are testing with 13 of our products. In that time 27,451 infringements have been found and 25,696 have been removed. We have the ability to go through the logs of both active and dead urls and the data matches up.

For us, the fact that there are almost 26,000 less free ways of getting our content plays into our business model.

We are happy with their service and realize there are other options for takedown services. We would encourage any studio to at least try any similar service such as yours-RemoveYourContent- because the general point is that these reasonable and feasible efforts play well with most content distribution business models.

Piracy always has been and always will be around. You have to factor in these things as part of the cost of doing business. It's like stores who know that a certain percentage of their merchandise will be stolen or damaged. That is part of the pricing consideration. They also factor in costs of securing their stores. So, with extra security, they have less theft. Are they spending more on security then they are saving by having less merchandise stolen? Content producers need to do the same thing. They will never end piracy 100% but should evaluate their costs and secure their content as best they can. Nothing is hackproof, but by making it more of a hassle to steal your stuff, they will move on to those who aren't keeping hoops out there to jump through.

Content producers have to get current with the latest technologies. I know that phrase has become a cliche, but it's true "adapt or die". Just like the video companies had to adapt to the Internet and those who didn't, died. Technology is always progressing and something that worked or made money a couple years ago doesn't necessarily do so now. Does it suck that companies are having to hire full legal teams and that expense cuts into their bottom line? Yes, but that's business. I'm not saying that fighting is futile, it's just that you have to deal with realities of business, whether they suck or not.

Want to cut down on piracy? Protect your content as much as you can. Provide the user an experience they can't get for free. Produce better content. Generic boy/girl sex scenes can be shot for free by a couple with a camcorder. If you keep churning out the same old crap, month in and month out, don't be surprised if you have to find a new profession soon. Look at your sites and evaluate them. Are they worth the effort? Are you bringing anything new to the table? or are you still doing the same things you were doing in 2001? Even the biggest brands have to come out with something new occasionally. New and improved! Are your sites new and improved? Or are they the same old relics of yesteryear that are nothing but a sad archive of technology passing them by?

Thank you. Everyone is obsessed with "tubes". The above sources for piracy are way BIGGER threats. They don't offer a low quality video here or there that belongs to a paysite.

They have ENTIRE site rips, sometimes in HD available for download. An entire site rip that is regularly updated and search engine friendly. Now THAT is the kind of free porn that kills an industry.

That's not to say tubes haven't done their share of damage.

I also wanted to point out something I noticed. File sharing and piracy of Japanese DVDs is just ridiculous.

I don't know who's genius idea it was to give Japanese DVDs a short serial number. If you google the serial number from a DVD the results for hotfile, RS, filesonic, etc links to download the video for free will show up BEFORE the actual company that is offering to sell it.

Makes me want to start a paysite called "tits pussy cum shot babe hot sluts gangbang". Yeah, good luck finding my videos ya jerkoffs!

- They probably don't know. I was in Tokyo, a few months ago, and met with studios who didn't know what a torrent was and had never heard of megavideo.

Locking down recorded content or searching the Internet for pirated porn is like sticking your finger in a leaking dike, or trying a King Canute and hoping to turn back the tide.

Few companies or site produce something so unique or different that makes protecting worth while. If company A protects his product, company B won't. For many reasons, can't afford to, can't be bothered or gone out of business. So the free consumer has something to view. And that's the problem. It's got little to do with the shop lifting analogy. This is customers who are deluged with free porn that's better for them to consume and more convenient.

The last part was the only route to go. But what's new and improved about putting up more pre recorded porn that's already out there in mountain loads? What are you going to do that's so different the customer HAS to buy it?

The problem is for 10 years we are still putting out the same old relics we were from the start. Pre recorded porn. The only advancement was us taking advantage of better technology. It's still the same old porn scenes.
