:2cents 7 billion people on earth in 2011 - 82% in developing countries...

in 2011 the mark of 7 billion people on this planet will be reached - and 82% of them live in developing countries.

so at which point the system is going to crash?

it will be a while. 50billion on the low side (eating at american food intake levels) change eating habits and that # goes up quite a bit.

It's already crashing. And it's the developed countries that started feeling the crash first.

i expect it to crash as well....however if people life expectancy goes up you should see a slowing down in the birth rate..unless they are just trying to outbreed people to take over

like what goes on in toronto..lol

Will the crash be food related or due to a disease like the plague?

I am not sure how is 82% since almost half of those 7 billions belong to China and India.

the population growth rate in developing countries is exponentially higher than in developed countries, so my guess would be mostly food related.

"unfortunately" we got rid of most plague like diseases which regulated overpopulation in the past.

There's bound to be something like unicorn flu that will do a population reduction at some point.

USA is the first cause for this over population, after the winning the second world war, the population of the poor countries hit the spike.

USA guys don't blame other countries for your mistakes.

The American NAZIS did won the war.

there's not one single research paper i've read on this topic that tries to shift blame, and i even directly mentioned the american diet in my op.

go fuck yourself.

take your misdirected anti-american agenda elsewhere.

there's by far too many reasons to pick out just one or one country

but i think in general you can say the exploitation of Africa by ALL western countries, nowadays also China and a small percentage of their own population is a big reason. WE all have destroyed Africa over the past hundreds of years.

Interesting numbers, I think in 2011 a lot will happen, very curious about our region (EU) and when the hyper inflation will start in the US

On a serious note. It's really time to move to the country side, learn some gardening and fire arms, have a lil chiken farm and sit chewing pop corn when it comes. And in my understanding it's so in heat that might just explode. Please, ensure me, i'm not just overreacting.

see - i never understood people who come up with that. what would it help? if it came to a situation where you couldn't buy any food anymore, do you really think you alone with a rifle on your farm will be doing anything against hordes of hungry, desparate outlaws who simply take what they want? it would make much more sense to join the Hells Angels or similar already now - cause that would put you in a good position when it comes to the worst.

It's not about being anti-american.. I bought my house thanks to 50% of the money made by US Dollars.. so Im not anti-american..

Its more about taking concern that USA made a lot of damage to the world and Im sure that many US citizens agree with me... Its about taking responsability...

And I like OBAMA.... Bush was a nazi fundamentalist tho...

Depends on what path humanity decides to take. There's more than enough resources on earth to feed & shelter everyone. Whether or not we let that happen remains to be seen.

population itself isn't the limit, it starts to crash when the cost of extracting and using fossil carbon liquid fuels crosses an unkown EROI (energy return on investment) threshold.

the EROI of light sweet crude petroleum is about 20 to one, if I recall correctly. You get 20 barrels worth of oil energy out for every barrels worth of oil energy you spend.

if the oil is heavier or more contaminated or in a difficult to extract location, the EROI drops to something between 10 to 16 to one.

tar sands oil has an EROI of 5 to 1. corn based ethanol has an EROI of between 1.1 to 2-something. It doesnt work economically. Coal turned to liquid fuels has a complex EROI, the old methods had an EROI of .5 (you use twice as much energy producing the fuel as you get out of it), but people think it can be improved to the tar sands level.

as a side point, people argue that the tar sands are only economical because you can pay for the fuel needed to run the trucks and system using energy purchased at the world market rates, and that the real EROI would be lower if you had to use tar sands fuel to operate the system. Eventually we will find out.

So, if we guess, and say the EROI threshold of tar sands is the collapse limit...

then we have about 30 years maybe. thats when 3/4ths of the existing "known" ("known" includes projected, it's a complex estimate that companies have motivation to inflate) petroleum reseves will have been used up, if use continues at the present rate.

if we are lucky enough to have plague, and use drops, the lifespan of our oil-based civilization gets a bit longer.

our only hope is to get off this rock...

our generation(s) should be ok for now... assuming we dont fuck it up (un?)intentionally... but a few generations for now... hard to be so sure.
