if you're talking about YOUR question, i am curious what you think he is being charged with
Manning was charged under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) with violations of UCMJ Articles 92 and 134 for "transferring classified data onto his personal computer and adding unauthorized software to a classified computer system," and "communicating, transmitting and delivering national defense information to an unauthorized source."

plus a few other non-criminal charges.. everything he needed to do for the whistleblow

They completely broke Jose Padilla. This kid might as well be written off mentally as well. Pretty sick what this government will do to it's own citizens. And look at all their fellow citizens cheering the government on. America as a country amounts to nothing more than a fucking sick joke.

What exactly is a non-criminal charge? And if you are not a liberal you sure play a good one on GFY.

Manning should be tried, convicted and executed for treason....... but until then he deserves humane treatment and a fair trial.

Thank you for your observation

What specifically is he being charged with that you have a problem with?

my first impression as well.

however, it occurred to me the question of who committed treason first?

nothing honestly, i want him to be tried and cleared of doing his duty as a soldier of the united states army.

or, at least treat him as a human being until you have proven him guilty.

no?

What has Manning done wrong?

He exposes Government lies, doing us all a favour, is that not good?

So if his treason isn't a crime because it was done for the "greater good" of whistleblowing, who determines what exactly is a whistleblower? How is whistleblowing determined in this case? The leaking of the information leads to....what exactly? What about the leaking of information that has absolutely no whistleblowing angle to them and would only cause harm? Or is it not his problem to make sure he doesn't leak that kind of stuff?

Hey, let's get into the real absurd - what about the leaking of real identities of secret agents? I mean if we're all about openness and transparency, then there should be no "secret" agents, right? (forget for a moment that other countries wouldn't dare forego having secret agents/spies) Well if that's the case, what about the whole Plame Affair? Why wouldn't leaking her identity be a good thing? Oh, because it puts her in harm's way? But what about the greater good of transparency or some bullshit?

I dunno...I just don't think there's really any good that can come out of the leaking of these documents. We learn what we already know - the government lies to us, the government does a lot of secret stuff, etc. WHICH GOVERNMENT DOESN'T? Throw the same microscope on the Russian, Iranian, Chinese, or really any government and see the same shit going on. Probably less shit for anyone who's not a world power because they're not huge and everywhere. People are hoping for openness everywhere and some sort of utopian society where there are no secrets and everyone loves everyone comes about, forgetting that there's sick fucking people out there that will fuck shit up.

So - the question is - considering this country, like all the other major powers out there, has enemies, enemies who can use a lot of what was leaked to their advantage, where is the line drawn between letting him off as a whistleblower and treating him as a criminal? Or should we just not bother classifying anything anymore, fuck doing anything militarily and let enemies of this country do whatever they want to us?

I can definitely understand where people are coming from who completely side with Manning/Wikileaks and applaud what's going on, but I just don't think I can side with them in this case. I don't think anything good is really going to come out of it. Again, people who are not stupid or brainwashed KNOW that our government lies to us. It doesn't matter who's in charge - it happens. What does exposing specific lies do? MAYBE unbrainwash a handful of people? Good luck with that...those people watch Fox News and they'll be getting their updates about the whole debacle from...Fox News.
