Move over, Groupon.... Google is aiming for you anus

Google to launch groupon competitor (aka knockoff)

Source: http://mashable.com/2011/01/20/google-offers/

Quote:
One of our sources has sent us a confidential fact sheet straight from the Googleplex about the company’s new group buying service. “Google Offers is a new product to help potential customers and clientele find great deals in their area through a daily email,” the fact sheet says.

Google Offers looks and operates much like Groupon or LivingSocial. Users receive an e-mail with a local deal of the day. They then have the opportunity to buy that deal within a specific time limit (we assume 24 hours). Once enough people have made the purchase, the Google Offer is triggered and users get that all-too-familiar $10 for $20 deal for that Indian restaurant they’ve never tried.

I wish the best to Groupon. I hope this is one of those cases where the original still does it best. Just so that they don't have to cry themselves to sleep wishing they had sold to Google the first time around...

I don't think so. Just about everything Google tried to get into lately was a major failure. Knol or Buzz immediately come to mind. Just because they have unlimited resources, it doesn't mean they know how to deliver anything of use.

Groupon for a long time relied on ads to boost its popularity, they were fucking everywhere. If Google does the site itself right, with their nearly costless access to millions of ad spots via AdSense they might grow huge in no time.

For how much everyone gushes about how great Google is, all they do is copy other people's shit. And they don't even do it in a timely manner, they wait until stuff is so popular that everybody on Earth knows about it, then they finally start taking an interest in it. So not only are they copy cats, they are slow as fuck being copy cats.

Google's model is to just sit it out, wait, and buy up anything that looks good with their enormous bankroll. When throwing billions of dollars isn't enough to get what they want, then they turn to the knockoff plan.

True. But I guess my point is that for such a forward thinking company, nobody seems to have an "eye" for what's hot over there.

They wait so long that now companies don't want to sell since they are at their peak. If Google had any sense of where the market was going, they would make an offer earlier and maybe actually own some of these new websites instead of just Youtube.

If they are loose with the cash, they would buy more websites when they are smaller based on a hunch and a few would have actually paid off by now (that's how they got Adwords). I honestly think they are very confused as the direction they want to go, maybe that's why there was the shakeup at the top there this week.

Their earnings from Adwords are amazing, but if you look at the moves they make, Google looks like a one trick pony, it's just that the one trick is a really, really, good one.

Groupons ads are still everywhere. Google could go bad ass on them and just turn all of Groupon's ads off.

I read somewhere Groupon wanted to sell to Google but they also wanted Google to put up 300 million if the sale wasn't completed. They were worried about anti-trust. I believe Google is still dealing with it's purchase of doubleclick. In the end Groupon pulled out because they didn't like the chances of their sale going through and Google wasn't backing it up with enough money.

Oh yea, this is going to be good. Those cocksuckers will wish they took that deal. With Google advertisers network, they are going to get crushed and I'm looking forward to it.

I like the first offer. Groupon's supposed to be coming to my country soon. I can't wait. Although I also can't wait to see what Google comes up with
