...Wikileaks down cold before anything was leaked. When the interviewer asked why they didn't do this...it was stated that the power to do that would only be used for something of real import.

Well, whoever got interviewed was an idiot, without much comprehension of how the internet works.

It was a former CIA agent that was being interviewed.

So it was some 68yo former CIA agent? Like I said, he probably doesn't know how the internet works.

My confidence level is high that they could have done this and I personally can think of several different ways it could be accomplished...although I personally do not have the knowledge to accomplish it. It is said that the DOD has to fend off several thousand attacks per day on their systems so it makes sense to me that they also know how to attack.

Then you have no idea of how the internet works either. Remember years ago, Bush trying to make an internet version 2? Well, that's because what's on the internet can't be controlled. A little bit, but not really.

Internet2 started before Bush and it running as we speak. A couple hundred universities have access to it as well as some big companies and government agencies. You get ~100Gb/s speeds.

You can think of how to do it but you don't have the knowledge of how. So how can you think of how to do it?

Hard to tell. It might be like Whack-A-Mole. There are alot of mirrors to take down too.

However, my guess is the US govt could have shut it down if they really wanted to.

Plenty of ways for the gov to shut down a website budy.

The backlash could have been greater then the leaks...

Internet 2 is in place. The system is centralised among universities and big corporations, and there are people lobying for it... or agaisn't the internet as we know it.

BTW, the US gov is taking over domains left and right. Domains that actually directly distribute non user submitted pirated content.

They have the ability to do this.

Heck, imho, it's likely various U.S. government agencies intentionally allowed the "leaks" to happen.

If they'd wanted to, they would have branded the Wikileaks operators as terrorists and sent them to Cuba and/or various secret prisons ...

And, furthermore, would have seized the domains (to date they have not; the .org domain is still active though it doesn't resolve) and would have ordered the various ISPs and gateways to block requests to Wikileak IP addresses (many ISPs already have such blocking / filtering abilities; used for blocking illicit underage content, etc).

As to why the U.S. government would allow such "leaks" to be widely published ... some possible reasons include diversionary tactics and to justify stricter government control of the internet - basically laying the groundwork for a U.S. firewall similar to that of what China has.

From a technical aspect, the internet is far more centralized than many realize - webhosting, domain names, traffic routing, gateways (ISPs), and network access points where traffic from numerous backbone networks converge...

Such as in the old Port Authority Building in NYC that Google recently bought for 1.8 billion; the building isn't worth that, but the access sure is, especially being that Google is reported to get black-budget money from the U.S. government.

Bottom line is that governments, in particular larger ones, such as the U.S. and China, have virtually unlimited resources ... if the U.S. wanted Wikileaks gone, it would have never seen the light of day - it wouldn't even be a new story.

What new, secret, earth-shattering info, that's not already publicly known / widely suspected / available via FOIA, did Wikileaks obtain?

To date, from what I've read in news reports and from those who have viewed Wikileaks, much of what's been posted are lots internal agency documents / communications.

Not truly "Top Secret" stuff ... or did Wikileaks reveal such info?

I thought thats obvious...wikileaks is nothing more than fun and doesn't really tell anything new or surprising. If it was about the really bad stuff(corruption on the highest levels, politics and mafia tied together, etc), it would never even came to the sunlight.

What are these real world events you speak of?

Has it occurred to you these "leaks" could be intentional to use an excuse to lock-down the U.S. portion of the internet; diversionary tactics...

To justify more government intrusion, such as what's occurred since 911 ...

And, going back a ways in history, purposely allowing the Pearl Harbor attack to happen, as the pretext for the U.S. to get involve in WWII.

Again, to reiterate my thoughts, to think the government allows things like Wikileaks to just happen is naive, but perhaps I'm mistaken? ...

If you believe my rationale is way off, post some detail of these world effects you speak of ... and, please, not some one-liners saying look it up on Google - post detail here. Thanks.
