Designers, what browser checks do you perform when checking code..?

subject pretty much says it all, what browser checks do you consider paramount when writing/checking html code? is it really necessary these days to be compliant w/ old/odd browsers (i.e. Netscape 4.0, etc...). do you even bother w/ anything other/older than IE 5.5..?

any input would be great, i'm not sure how much of my time should be wasted checking a bunch of old html for compliance when it loads fine already in IE 5.5 and up. Dreamweaver MX reports hundreds of errors, but they all seem to be related to non-IE browsers... Netscape, Safari, etc..

on a related note, any good html software for *correcting* non-compliant code..?
