Do these KVS servers meet common todays requirements and are they price competitive?

Hi. So far we have 1 KVS client (conversion & storage servers). We have our own kvs site dedicated to domaining dnmum.com and thinking of setting up another one (a tube for Latvian webmasters).

As my team are getting more used to KVS, I am thinking of starting offering KVS servers for new clients.

Do you mind sharing your experience and maybe even experience of dealing with your favourite hosting provider?

And, could you share your experience if any of these numbers are overkill or opposite, too low?

Main Server (website):
- CPU - 4 Cores & 8 Threads
- RAM - 64GB
- Disk Space - 2x 480GB (RAID 1)
- HDD Type - Datacentre SSD or NVMe
- Bandwidth - Unmetered Traffic
- Connection - 1GB
+ incl. server support (up to 8hrs/month)

We have a client with 1.5 - 2.5 mil/month users = used space 66Gb / bandwith 961Gb/month

*****

Conversion Server:
- CPU - 8 Cores and 16 Threads
- RAM - 64GB
- Disk Space - 2x 480Gb (RAID 1)
- HDD Type - Datacentre SSD or NVMe
- Bandwidth - Unmetered Traffic
- Connection - 1GB
+ incl. server support (up to 8hrs/month)

Our client: traffic usage 212GB with spikes (max 32GB/day)

*

we also have v2 conversion server (for double the price) with:

CPU - 8 Cores and 16 Threadsha(Intel Xeon W-2245)
and RAM 128GB

*****

Storage Server:
- CPU - 4 Cores & 8 Threads
- RAM - 64GB
- Disk Space - 2x 10 TB (RAID 1) and up
- HDD Type - SATA
- Bandwidth - 5TB and up (we offer unmetered)
- Connection - 1GB
- Bandwidth - Unmetered Traffic
+ incl. server support (up to 8hrs/month)

I'm targeting $155/month per server.

I am still thinking of the best backup solution for these. What do you use for backup?

Would love to hear any thoughts, comments.

.. I did try advertising higher prices, those didn't get any results. I suppose, we need to make our name first.. and this will be great experience for my team.

An issue with high traffic websites that stream video is that they need high IOPS that HDDs can't achieve. Usually even SATA SSDs are just fine. NVMe disks are faster and it's funny that they are nowadays cheaper than SATA for consumer grade products. Not sure about data center grade disks though. Hosting a lot of videos take too much space, so only 480GB is simply not enough. You would probably have to introduce TBs of disk space.

By the way, I would assume the bandwidth is 1Gbps unmettered, and that should be more than enough for most tubes. That's like 928MB/s on TCP, and your hardware will go down first, before the bandwidth is burnt. So, that's perfect offer.

What is your T1 peering? Using European data centers is usually good use case for storage servers for European traffic, but doesn't work really well for North American visitors, unless you have perfect T1 peering. What is the legal status of hosting adult content in Germany? I would assume Finland will work better in those terms.

You don't really need that much RAM (16GB is usually more than enough, 32GB in some rare cases), so you could save some bucks if that makes any difference. nginx is very memory optimized, and ffmpeg as well when you re-encode.

If you want to make top notch conversion servers, you could think about GPU encoding. Not sure about GPU prices nowadays (they are expensive), but you could also think of NVidia hardware encoding: https://docs.nvidia.com/video-techno...th-nvidia-gpu/

In my experience, there's very seldom need for GPU encoding. Those Xeon servers are more than powerful for such a task. You might want to look for Xeon CPUs with a GPU. Intel QuickSync is something that can substantially improve speed of encoding:
https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us...SyncVideo=True

If those are semi-managed servers (if you set up KVS, ocassionally update servers, and take care of the infrastructure 24/7), your pricing is very competitive.

Hope my comments were helpful.
