A gun is a gun.. Dosent matter what kind its still a gun. If you are using it for home protection then anything that fires is a good guess..

Now if its targets depends on what kind of target and what kind of target range you are at... Where do you plan on shooting at?

theres alot to concider. if your in for strickly home defense, teh 12 gauge shotgun is perfect. Its reliable, easy to use, & hard to miss. Skeet shooting is far more fun than pistol target shooting. looking for something a little more compact, then go with a 9mm, shells are cheaper than .40 or .45's but still substantal large bullet. Plus 9mm is a more managable gun for those who are handgun virgins. Anything smaller & your alot less likley to drop what your shooting @, meaning teh idea is to stop the Crack Head, not wound him & piss him off. hell you can shoot a gopher with a .22 & it will still run away & then die. If you gonna do something do it right.

MindWaste, I plan to shoot at the local indoor shooting range here in Philly, where it's perfectly legal to carry a gun. That blows my mind. Alot different than where I grew up in California..

Lightswitch, I agree 12 gauge would be awesome home protection, but it's not pratical for what I want. I'd like something I can take to the shooting range and also for home protection.. is a 9mm what I want?

I've got an H&K USP, nine mm. Very, very accurate, very fine weapon. I know I can hit exactly what I aim at with it.

It's great for target shooting as well.

It's the Rolex of handguns.

A Glock is a good place to start, cheaper, pretty accurate, more like the Swatch of handguns.

I wish there were more places to shoot like that around where I live.. I usually end up shooting out at my parents property out in the bouneys..

..and about having a 12 guage as an in house gun.. First of all it whould do the job if you were able to get to it in time. They are way to bulky and akward in this type of situation. Plus not to mention the holes that you leave not only in the victem but also in your house and all your stuff around your target..

I whould say that any type of hand gun that is compact and easily stored and easily reached whould be good. Its not always the power that matters.. especially if you never even get to your weapon in the first place..

Glocks are good except that they are made out of plastic and if you store them in a warm place and/or dont shoot them for awhile they may jam and or back fire..

Yup.. You can break into someones house be shot and then sue them and win. Sounds kinda fucked up eh?? Has to do with using excessive force.. Kinda like using that 12 guage to blow away someone that has no weapon or dosent cause any threat..

I myself carry a 357 revolver. Ask for home-defense shells (with blue plastic tips). They are just like little shotgun shells for pistols. The pellets offer great stopping power for short distance and are more safe (to family on other side of walls) than standard shells.

Oh, and port the barrel so, even if you miss, the gun sounds like a cannon. You may be able to scare the bad guys away.

If you have children... please keep their safety in mind when storing your weapon!!!

Try a contender with a 410 barrel. The hubby swears by it but has a 9mm and a 380 close by if the one shot would miss. 380's are nice if you are a good shot. The hollowpoints have good stopping power without alot of concern about shooting thru the whole house and then getting the neighbor too.

HK is my company of choice too.
for home protection and target practice go with the p7m13 - that is the true rolex of handguns.

the usp is okay (definately don't do the Mark23...unless you are goin for a suppressor too) BUT

the reason the p7m13 is better is that not too many people are familiar with it... if the bad guy gets ahold of your gun he prolly won't be able to fire it... same with small children. (you need to squeeze a safety that is in front of the grip and the trigger in order to fire the gun)

definately stick with 9mm or smaller... won't go through walls and hit your neighbors. (may need to shoot the asshole twice though...not a problem if you are panicking you'll likely shoot him/her more than that)

the new submachine gun from hk USC 45 is awesome...

looks ugly. never would have shot it if it weren't an hk. but with their record I gave it a shot. I've been shooting since I was 8 years old. I have never in my life shot a range gun that accurate. From the list of guns I mention that is quite an impressive statement.

Can't wait to try the .223 one. I also have a mini 14. my brother tricked it out to resemble the A-team's mini14s. That's the gun I always wanted. Got that when i turned 13. PreBan - - - ahh shitttttt.

I havent been shootin for awhile.. Ever sence my parents fenced off a bunch of thier property for horses.. Cant really shoot out there any more because the horses get spooked and start actin crazy and my Mom dosent like it..

Although from 24k pic I couldn't see anything different on the trigger/grip then a normal pistol..or maybe you just can't see it that well from the pic. Anyway I plan to head down to the gun store tomorrow and see if they have one in stock to check it out.

Yeah, H&Ks are the way to go anthonyR.
I was gonan go with teh H&K, but picked up a sweet deal on a pre-ban Ruger p94.(It would be fucken nice if Bush, did something about the fucken 10 round clip law) anywyas, I recomend the H&K & like my ruger too. just never buy a BERETTA! Ive had three bad experinces with them(1 of them I own) something about there design, fucken things dont always advance next shell!!! Anywyas anthonyR, teh point of this post was to answer more of your questions, that werent being covered. HK, Glock, Rugger. important shit is stuff liek make sure it fits your hand. i have a freind who bought a hangun he cant reach teh clip release, or the saftey with his thumb, he has to use two hands. a gun should feel right in your hand. shouldnt ahve any chincey parts, less plastic is usually more desirable. & my advice is to stick with the 9mm, the HK USP is a FUCKEN SWEET MACHINE, but its a godamn hand cannon. just by nature a hand gun is hard to acuratly shoot everytime, & teh recoil produced by a .45 cal is far worse than a 9mm. meaning it increases your chances, of getting off a 2nd shot thats acurate if your shooting a more manageable weqpon. a 38. cal. revolver is another good way to go. inexpensive & reliable.
As for those who think a 12 gauge is gonna make a mess in your house. no matter what you hit someone with the fucker is gonna bleed all over the godamn place & make a mess. i garenteee you your not gonna give a fuck about the damage to the house, if the crackhead is still comming @ you. when it comes to protecting myself, family & belongings i want the best. even if it mean i have to patch a few holes in teh wall.
as far a compactness, short barreled pistol griped shotguns really are not that much bigger or cumbersome than a hand gun.
& yes, if your new to guns take a class!

Lightswitch, the hubby said to either get jacked loads for the berretta or have a smith stroke the spring down abit. It will outfire almost any handgun going if its done right.

Anytime an auto isn't chambering consistantly, it's the ammo hasn't enough power or the slide spring is too stiff.

the p7m13 is a preban - you'll pay a hefty premium for the extra 5 rounds - 1300 i think. a better bet is to look for a p7 m8 prolly only run 800-900

Thanks for the tip!, teh point is though for what you pay for a gun, it should work right without having to modify it.

It's not so much that the gun isn't working correctly but that the ammo isn't working. An automatic needs a certian amount of gas pressure to chamber the next round, tiny variations in pressure can cause it to misfire.

For a home protection and target shooting combination try the .357 magnum. This caliber has excellent ballistics, good stoping power and ammo is readily available. You can also fire .38's with them which is really nice for a low kick target load. If you shoot enough to reload your own ammo you can do both calibers very cheaply. You can even get custom headstamp brass (put your .COM on em).

BrettJ, I was told the p7 m8 , new was $1200 and $600-700 used.
Is there any problems to look out for buying a used gun?
Also the guy at the gun store, hasn't seen any p7 m8's in a long time and made a few phone calls and couldn't find one in my local area.. It seems to be kinda rare?
