I have tried it with several sites, and all it seems good for is very SPAMMY likes and twitter followers and +1s, that will do far more damage to your SERPs than it will good.
Take twitter for example ... if you have a site on fitness, but you have 10'000 followers that are gamers, gamblers, and Get Rich Quick opportunities, that is going to damage your site integrity, as opposed to your competition that has 3'000 targeted weight-loss, fitness, and general health-related follows ...
