I think it all depends on how the news initially reported the end of the world in 5 years and how they kept the public up-to-date on that fact. I don't have a lot of faith in the intelligence of humanity, so I'd happen to guess that:
1. At first announcement there'd be a lot of riots and crime.
2. Most people would then forget what their rioting about and realize they just fucked up the place they live (if the news of the event stopped). If the news kept mentioning it, people would become desensitized regardless.
3. Then they'd go back to work and their daily lives.
4. A few weeks before the incident, regardless of how the news reports the even, return to #1.
Obviously, there'd be some people who would act differently and change their entire lives for that five years, but I think most people wouldn't.
