Below is an excerpt of a post I made on one of my websites back in late 2003 on how to better secure MSIE; which eliminates most annoyances at the same time:

Be sure to note all setting changes as you make them so you may revert them back if needed.
1. Click on _Tools_ in MSIE, then click _Internet Options_, then click _Security_ so it's highlighted, then click _Custom Level_, and make the following adjustments:
* Download signed ActiveX controls: Prompt (recommended) or Disable
* Download unsigned ActiveX controls: Disable
* Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe: Disable
* Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins: Prompt (recommended) or Disable
* Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting: Prompt (recommended) or Disable
* Downloads: Disable when not needed (this may cause much inconvenience for some users and thus in those instances it may be easier for them to leave it Enabled all the time)
* Font download: Prompt (recommended) or Disable
* Java permissions: High safety (recommended) or Disable
* Access data sources across domains: Disable
* Drag and drop or copy and paste files: Enable (often fine) or Prompt or Disable
* Installation of desktop items: Prompt (recommended) or Disable
* Launching programs and files in an IFRAME: Prompt or Disable
* Navigate sub-frames across different domains: Enable (often fine) or Prompt (for additional security) or Disable
* Software channel permissions: High safety
* Active scripting: Enable (often fine) Prompt (more secure, but may make some websites unusable) or Disable
* Scripting of Java applets: Prompt (recommended; note Active scripting may also need to be enabled/prompt for proper functioning of applets) or Disable
Be sure to click OK button to save your changes.
For more completeness, one may also choose to make some setting changes in the _Local intranet_ zone - however, this may cause excessive inconvenience and possibly break some functions in Windows that rely on MSIE.
2. Click on _Privacy_ tab, then click _Advanced_ button, and make the following changes - these don't necessarily improve one's security per se and may be skipped, but offer additional privacy:
* Override automatic cookie handling: Checked

Be sure to click OK button to save your changes.
4. Click on _Programs_ tab and make the following changes:
* HTML editor: Notepad
* E-mail: Third party email program such as Eudora or AOL mail. Hotmail may be ok in some instances. Outlook Express only as a last resort; be sure to have latest updates.
* Newsgroups: Third party program such as Forte Agent. Outlook Express is not recommended, but may be the only option available.
* Internet call: Netmeeting (likely only choice shown)
* Calendar: blank - if it's set, be sure it's set to point to the application you expected
* Contact list: Address Book (likely only choice shown) - it's best to have few or no contacts in address book for enhanced security; this approach is not as useful as it once was due to many viruses scanning caches, etc.
Be sure to press OK button to save your changes.
5. Click on _Advanced_ tab and examine the following settings:
* Enable folder view for FTP sites: Unchecked (may no longer matter due subsequently released security packs)
* Scroll down to Multimedia section - if highly concerned about security and rarely/never play multimedia clips, then Uncheck the following: Play animination in web pages, Play sounds in web pages, Play videos in web pages - changing any of these three settings may cause much inconvenience for some users.
Be sure to click OK button to save your changes.
6. There are various unpatched security holes in MSIE including the mshta.exe flaw. mshta.exe is a valid Microsoft file, but can be misused in some instances by rouge webpages that contain embedded executable script. As of this writing, there is no patch for the mshta flaw - one workaround is to disassociate the HTA filetype in MSIE.
mshta flaw workaround until patch is released - may cause some pages not to function properly:
Click _Start_, then click _My Computer_, then click _Tools_, then click _Folder Options_, then click _File Types_ and make the following change:
* Scroll down and click on HTA, then click _Delete_ and press OK to confirm deletion.
(To restore the HTA file type in the future, return to this same menu and add file type HTA and point it to mshta.exe)
This above change doesn't remove mshta.exe nor prevent its execution by various programs in Windows that utilize it, but rather should prevent embedded executable code in webpages from being executed unknowingly via mshta.exe.
6a. While in Folder Options, for additional security (not related to the mshta flaw), click on _View_ tab and examine the following settings:
* Display the full path in the address bar: Checked
* Display the full path in the title bar: Checked
* Hide extensions for known file types: Unchecked
Often file attachments will be masked, such as this example "badfile.txt.exe" - the above setting changes better ensures one sees the entire file name.
Be sure to click OK button to save your changes.
Please note that there are numerous other settings and variations thereof that can greatly affect security depending on one's computer configuration. The above setting changes are suggestions only and are made solely at your own risk - please be sure to document all setting changes as you make them so you can revert back settings if necessary.
