The most unique do the best. Otherwise you are swimming in a sea with other sharks, and trying to make your's stand out from the rest.

I'll give you a quick example, on my host (b-h-e.com) there was a couple of college kids who started a variation of foot fetish as a "cast fetish" site. Never heard of such a thing myself, or saw the appeal. Anyways, these two college kids basically created the niche, and were the only, biggest, and best in no time.
