I know for a fact Ive dealt with this kind of family opperation. Many of us have. But to what extent are we responsible being we were in the dark as to what we were sending our surfers to and what they were doing to our traffic we sold them??

Made tons of money selling off traffic to so called dialer companies "Jesus Dialers" we called em as jokes, but most likely organized crime Gambino dialers and such would be a better name for em... Im sure ive sent traffic to many fuckers like this in the past, and hell still may be doing it.. But #1 how do we protect ourselves from getting pulled into this kinda shit, and #2 how responsible are we as webmasters giving people like this traffic, even if we too are like victums in that we unknowingly have sent these guys traffic not knowing what the hell our surfers are put through.

Playgirl Web Site Faces FTC Charges

Thousands of Consumers Illegally Billed for "Free Tours" Promoted by Sites

The owners and operators of www.playgirl.com, www.highsociety.com and scores of other adult Web sites have been charged by the Federal Trade Commission with illegally billing thousands of consumers for services that were advertised as "free," and for billing other consumers who never visited the Web sites at all. The FTC and the New York Attorney General have filed suit in U.S. District Court seeking to halt the illegal billing practices and have asked the Court to freeze the defendants' assets, pending trial, to provide for consumer redress.

New York City-based Crescent Publishing Group, Inc., its owner, Bruce Chew, and principal David Bernstein, are named as defendants in the federal court complaint detailing the charges, along with 64 affiliated corporations that operate the adult entertainment Web sites. According to the complaint, the "Free Tour Web Sites" generated income of $188 million between 1997 and October 1999 -- $141 million of which was generated in the first 10 months of 1999 alone.

According to the complaint, the defendants operate scores of adult entertainment Web sites, promoting them as "free." The "Free Tour Web Sites" claim that consumers' credit card numbers are required solely to prove that the consumers are of legal age to view the adult material, and that the credit cards will not be billed. But thousands of consumers were charged recurring monthly membership fees ranging from $20 to $90, the complaint says. Consumers who tried to dispute the charges were met with a variety of barriers designed by the defendants to thwart their efforts. According to the complaint, the defendants use billing names different than the names of the Web sites, so consumers often had no idea who was billing them or why. Moreover, consumers often had difficulty the contacting defendants to get refunds from information provided to them on their billing statement.

According to the joint FTC/ New York A.G. complaint, the defendants routinely change corporate billing names and merchant banks in an attempt to avoid the fraud detection systems of credit card organizations such as Visa U.S.A. When it realized what the defendants were doing, Visa U.S.A. disqualified them from using its credit card system. The defendants moved their merchant banking relationship to Guatemala, adopted several new merchant names, and continued to process credit card transactions.

The FTC and the New York Attorney General allege that Crescent and its principals have violated the FTC Act and New York state law. They have asked the Court to halt the deceptive and unfair practices, to appoint a receiver to oversee the businesses and to freeze the defendants' assets pending trial to preserve them for consumer redress.

The Commission vote to file the complaint was 5-0.

The complaint was filed August 23, 2000 in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Ive "brokered" traffic or refered "Family" to many places marketed as "dialers" or "toolbars" later to be discovered as scams and illegal exploits and such that had high $$ payouts or rewards, only later to be discovered as illegal practices..

Naturally we never really figured out what they were until they were shut down, and we were paid big sums of $$, but nevertheless we discovered on multiple occasions afterthefact what was going on to be illegal, either after we ourselves were never paid for back months pay and ripped off ourselves, and or becasue their companies were shut down by local authorities..

Hence the entire International Dialer market in the past 2 years.

I mean we all had kind of an idea there was a risk to what we were sending our traffic to, and knew there was a risk that perhaps the traffic wasnt going to a dialer, but something more illegal, but it was just hearsay. They were More worries in our heads that we ourselves were to get ripped off and not paid which happed ohh soo often.. But when the large $$ was recieved month after month our concerns of what or how they made us this money was kind of pushed aside..

90% of the time the money just ended in some kind of shut down or freeze becasue later to find out their practices were illegal.. We were ripped off for selling our traffic and not getting paid and were victums ourselves often.

I mean its fucking scarry.. Here I am, already spent the money they have sent me for my traffic, and they are under some kind of investigation for abusing the traffic I sent them..

Its just fucking scarry.. Last thing I want is years down the road to be named in some shit like this because the bastards I sent traffic to years ago were engaged in practices that were illegal in nature.. But like many webmasters turned a blind eye to really try and figure out what they were doing with our traffic becasue the $$ was so good.

Last internext was the most disturbing one ive ever attended.
Hearing about and learning that much of the people I did biz with and sent traffic to in 03 are under some government trouble in thier countries for the practices in which they made money off my and others traffic.

It was truely disturbing.
