well, actually the group who wants to make .xxx claim that it will be voluntary but its obvious that in their own best interest would be if it would be made mandatory ( especially with their $60 per domain pricing )
and it could theoretically be made mandatory on a global level in future
some politicians want to make it mandatory, other oppose it, religious gropus oppose it too, porn guys mostly oppose it ( although there are a few sellouts who want to profit from it so they support it )
actually it has much opposition and the only ppl who want it are the guys from ICANN and the ICM Registry, who applied to run .xxx and they have no porn background but claim to want to create .xxx so the 'responsible' adult webmasters can put their sites there to protect children and some bullshit and they claim that it will put self regulation into the adult industry while in fact the board structure of the ogranisation running it will mostly consist of child protection experts and no ppl from the adult world
well everyone has a different agenda and there are many reasons why just the simple fact making a 'voluntary .xxx in a few days from now could evolve into a mandatory .xxx for porn content
webmasters who branded their coms would lose huge income, there would be legal nightmare with everyone competing for the same .xxx domains, porn would be filtered everywhere, also on ISP level, often by default etc etc
well lots of scenarios + I also have my own reason ( not mentioned here ) why I am strongly opposed to this idea
