Is it forbidden to say C.U.N.T on the US radio stations?

Talked to a guy who's making songs and he said that he's not allowed to say C.U.N.T in a song text if he wants to be played on the stations. There's a whole list with forbidden words and he gets a monthly update (kinda like a newsletter issued by the gov).

How is that acceptable for a country like the US? I mean, i read so many posts here about free speech and stuff regarding the US. Just lies?

It's one of the 7 words in Carlin's original list, so yes, you can't say that over the air in the US.

        Free speech My ass.

"Shit, piss, fuck, kuntt, cocksucker, motherfucker and tits."

There's a few hundred years worth of history on the subject of constitutional "free speech". Needless to say, the original context in the constitution has to do with the right to assemble and so forth and nothing to do with dirty words. Basically, you should have the right to complain about your government or political opponents. Many nations of the world have co-opted this following the example of the US constitution.

In time, perverts like you and I have attempted to expand the definition of free speech. It's quite clearly working as words that could not be aired on television 30 years ago can today (with South Park as my leading example).

Now, there are varying degrees of free speech in many different countries and different nations are more or less open to different kinds of free speech. Maybe you can say "c u n t" on the radio in Switzerland but it's illegal there to deny the holocaust and as you probably know people have been arrested there because of it. Hope that example is illustrative enough.

                      No, I mean Switzerland.

                      --------

                      January 14, 2003

On Monday morning, January 13, Gaston-Armand Amaudruz was jailed in Switzerland for having expressed doubts about the existence of homicidal gas chambers in World War II German concentration camps, and for saying that he did not believe the figure of six million wartime Jewish dead. Complying with a summons, the publicist and retired teacher, who is 82 and in poor health, presented himself to the special ?high security? penitentiary at l?Orbe, about 20 kilometers north of Lausanne. He is to be held there for three months. In addition, there are fines and court and legal expenses.

Well, that's all fine but are you just as angry about your own government's restricting the rights of its citizen's free speech?

The U.S Constitution allows free speech, the U.S. Government fights against the Constitution to try to stop free speech.

It's always been that way, but it's especially bad right now because the U.S. currently has a right wing extremist government.

That's why you have to keep fighting and supporting groups that are fighting for your rights.

regarding Amaudruz and the ?anti-racism" law in Switzerland.
You are absolutly allowed to talk about the holocaust and you are absolutly allowed to deny it. But you are not allowed to publish it (books, newspapers ...). That again depends on how you say it and thats a judge who has to decide that (maybe you are having a discussion whether those gas chamber existed or not ... thats allowed of course, no problems at all).

Amaudruz printed hate articles in a newspaper and that was the reason why he was arrested

The government fights on both sides. When the Supreme Court rules against a law like CDA it is one branch of the US government winning out over another - judicial over legislative and executive.

I doubt the writers of the constitution were concerned about protecting one's right to say "slut" .. but maybe.

In many countries you can write such articles and you'll probably just get fired and beat up by an angry mob instead of serving jail time. Exactly what I was saying. "Free speech" has different interpretations in different countries.

Really true free speech. Does it exist anywhere?

remember, radio station airwaves are owned by the public and when members of that public are vocal against it, the FCC steps in...there are groups in this country who do nothing but organize letter writing and phonecall campaigns against certain programs...which "owners" of the airwaves should be listened to? the ones who complain or those who just sit around complaining about lack of freedom of speech?
If we allow the word "c.u.n.t" on the radio, should we also allow it on Sesame Street too?

Hell, we're not even allowed to say the word "c u n t" on GFY!

Sykk, that's a tough one. Maybe we should all be less uptight and let our kids say words like "c u n t". That's not reality though. We all have to share this place.

I really have no problem with people who don't want the word "c u n t" on Sesame Street. Though I disagree with them, I understand the people who don't want the word "c u n t" said on the radio or television at all. I get where they are coming from.
