I might as well try to get an answer on my CCBill question that I've tried to get an answer on several times now without any luck.
Why can a CCBill sponsor add a form variable to its join page that is hosted on their own server that will change the referred webmaster ID?
Example 1.
I send a surfer to a sponsor through a CCBill link code. They go to the join page and click join and is sent to CCBill. There I can see that the referred webmaster is myself.
Example 2.
I send a surfer to a sponsor through a CCBill link code. They go to the join page with a special form variable that has a different webmaster ID, they click join and is sent to CCBill. Now the referred webmaster is not myself, it has the value of what was set on the join page.
I've seen examples of this and I've tried it myself.
What my question is: What use does this have? If they change the referred webmaster, does that mean the person that sent the surfer will not get any credit?
Another related topic could be 'follow-me' traffic. I was surprised to learn that some of the big boys don't credit their affiliates on internal cross sales (or external).
As an affiliate, while I appreciate when a sponsor quickly remedies the discovery of a problem or unacceptable policy, by that time, the jigs up and whatever they do (set their cookies or change policies) doesn't matter as much because they only did it after they were busted (and probably would not have if their settings/policies went undetected/unchallenged) - that doesn't instill much trust in that sponsor.

That also seems to be one of the biggest problems, lots of sponsors have shitloads of exit's and traffic "leaks" for which the affiliates don't get credit for...pfff
I don't know why programs only use hardcode tracking and cookies. Both have points of failure. I know my system doesn't track other ways, but I would think with ALL the cookie issues coming out that programs would start to include ip tracking, backup referring id tracking or something to help improve it.
Just my two cents as a program owner.
Doc, it would be nice to know what % of signups a program can't track and give credit to.
Would it be in the vicinity of 10%?

Well, I think that number is really unknown.. Really, you can't track every visitor, so many factors to add in.
1) Webmasters have errors on the page, in linking, or didn't close a font tag, something that makes it so our link isn't clickable, which creates a type-in from the webmasters referring URL. (I would think less than 1-2%).. I do find about 1 webmaster a week with some error though. Lanas and scoregroup both have been told about errors when linking to us.
2) With current hardcoded/cookie systems the point of failure happens when cookies are off/blocked, and the visitor for some reason removes the linking code to go to the root of the domain (The warning page). If cookies are off, the surfer is ours. If they go through the billing companies it's a point of failure and depending on the program it could have others. Quality of traffic seems to make this problem less of an issue.
3) Hosted galleries.. 404 traffic and the same thing as above, enough said..
4) 404 and 401 traffic don't pass through ID's if cookies are off for most programs.
5) And every other possible error that could happen. Surfer issues with browsers, OS's, security patches, special software to block reading or setting of cookies, ip blockers, referrer blockers, and the list goes on. These don't always affect the tracked sales, but it can.
Many programs do what they can to make sure the webmaster gets credit for the sale. In my opinion if you push a pps program, you take your chances and they make up the extra cash with things like this. Recurring programs in my opinion should try and figure out how to keep track of the visitor no mater where they go.
As for cookies, we DID NOT notice any change in webmaster ratios/signups, etc.. When we changed from a 10 day cookie to a 90 day cookie.
So depending on the program.. 10% would be the lowest point.
thanks alot for taking the time to give a detailed answer Doc.Much appreciated.
Could it be as high as 30%?
Cheers
Depending on the program, webmaster, sites, etc. Yeah, 30% isn't a problem. 50% isn't impossible..
With a few changes I can pull off at least 50% of my webmasters traffic from the hosted galleries. Doesn't do me any good cause the shit doesn't convert, but I can do it just from a few changes that webmasters wouldn't notice.
Name pictures, 01, 03, 05.jpg, etc.. 404's that dump directly to the paysites, all kinds of funky shit, only make ONE link clickable, OVER branding of the product produces type-ins..
Tell ya this.. MOST site owners don't do this to rip traffic on purpose.. Most don't knowknow where to look or understand enough about marketing/design to help the problem.

Fuck.I ought to be thinking about making my own paysite then.
This is golden information Thanks Doc.The frankness is enlightening.
wow thats a confrontation to me, i tought it was link 6 months or so! so most of the programs set it on 30days only?!
I'm afraid that for some of the programs, 30 days is even a LOT. I think 30 days is very reasonable. There's a lot issues that you have to keep in mind when you're setting these periods.

I saw 9 different aff ref codes on a TCG exit today.
I checked out some NATS programs, they were all set to 10 days.
But on some of them it didn't matter if there was a cookie or not. When I returned to their first page, their own tracking code was hard coded on the ENTER link
can someone make a page with the list of the sponsors, their cookie expiry time, and if they to things like this, with the ENTER link?

That is the only known way of shaving when using CCBill stats. There's a couple different ways of pulling it off, but as you found out they can be seen if the affiliate is looking.
We would be very interested to know what sites you saw doing this.

come to think about it.. you can't want $35+ pop per signup and want cookies set AND set for a long time too. Wanna force them to shave by other means? It's like you want a free cake plus you demand icing on the top lol. But for revshares they should be set to atleast 1 year.
I think ccbill set cookies to three days - Max is 255 days, which is where we have the settings -
Whatever, things will never be 100% correct - The other day I had an email from a prospective member (writing from one of our bloggs) He then joined from an email link - Yet his sale came up as an affiliates - Work that one out!
