I hate it when people address me "My Dear"

I really get annoyed when I'm talking to someone and they say "My Dear", it feels like they are patronizing me or talking down to me as a subordinate, it really is a pet peeve of mine.

I am almost 30 years old, I want to be treated with some respect. Someone called today asking for someone, and they kept calling me "my dear" and it irritated me so much that I felt compelled to start a thread about it. I suppose I'm passive agressive because I did not TELL this person that I was annoyed at them addressing me by "My Dear" at the time so it made me feel even more annoyed that I didn't stand up for myself.

It's really "patronizing" when someone talks to you like that, as if you are not on their level and their equal but a subordinate or something of the sort.

    Very fucken annoying.

My Dear get back in the kitchen and finish baking me a pie, then after that go get the nail clippers and cut my toenails.

        My Dear,

Don't let yourself get so upset about such silly things my dear. Once you're older and more mature you'll understand.

I agree with you here. Add in 'haus, pal, ace', and a dozen others means NO TIP FOR YOU.

But equally applies in test driving new cars, buying major appliaces, furniture, and so on. I will just come back later in the day, or next, and buy from someone else.

Yep, I'm like this too. When someone annoys me like this I just buy from someone else. What's even worse is when I'm buying something and the salesperson completely ignores me but only talks to the person I am WITH, that is totally rude.

I read somwhere in a study that women and blacks get treated differently at car dealerships than white men. Women and blacks tend to get either ignored, or quoted a higher price and in generally just not treated as well.
Some salesmen in this study even said demeaning things such as "Don't you have to ask your husband for permission first before purchasing this vehicle"?

                Bad customer service.

Because I'm one of those people who are sometimes a bit timid and for some reason can't speak up at the moment it happens, but in hindsight when thinking back I get annoyed. Like I said I'm passive agressive, I think that's the word for it. I get annoyed but don't speak up for myself and later when I think about it I get even more annoyed and then take it out on something else. Or at the moment I'm just too flustered and can't think of something to say, I only think of the appropiate comments in hindsight.

This is true on two levels.

My old roommate was black. When we would go somewhere for a major purchase. He was buying, and I was just there to help carry shit. The sales people at almost every single store would come up to me first and talk to me. Never even saying hello to him. I would have to say, he's the one buying. They would then go bug him before returning to me. This happened more than one time, even one day at 7 different furniture places.

When I go into shop with the gf, they spend all their time talking to her trying to get her to buy. But then will talk to me about stereotype bullshit. She will cut you off if you do not buy what she wants, and so forth.

I refuse to buy from them either. Anyone playing the alpha male macho card on me and using female stereotypes. Whether I believe in them or not.

Oh don't get on your horse about that shit. Try being a YOUNG white man that goes to a car dealership dressed in blue-jeans and a t-shirt. Lets just say those salesfags weren't to happy after I made my purchase from the used car salesman that was nice from second 1.

"my dear" connotes sarcasm for me. if someone addresses me "my dear" it makes me think that he/she is already annoyed talking to me but just want to remain ethical.

in the north of England people call each other (particuarly women) 'duck'. 'Don't worry duck', 'Nice to see you duck'. I never get used to it.
