Search engine traffic has paid all my bills and the occasional Martinis for many years now.

SE traffic converts better than any other traffic.

Legitimate SEO (still) works.

Perhaps, but there are a lot of great SEO boards out there, SEO sites and other information (articles, etc.) that you can become a guru yourself.

I disagree.

There are many public sources of very effective and current information relating to search engine optimization (even GFY) where those involved in SEO share relevant and useful tips.

It takes a lot more than the usual misinformation on boards and in articles to become any kind of 'guru'.
