Palm Treo650 OR Nokia 9500 Communicator or Blackberry

I was just shoping around for a PDA phone and I was near ordering a Nokia 9500 for my remote management needs.

My requirements are mail, web, ICQ and most important ssh!!! Ssh is easy with Nokia because of Symbian OS and there is opensource putty available for Symbian.

The only phone I am familiar with is the Nokia, do you know anything about the other two? I have just browsed their websites but its hard to judge from only the pics and descriptions, I need advice from real people using these phones.

I dont have any one of these yet, but I do know several entusiasts that have recently switched from Blackberry to the 9500 simply because the SSH capabilities are better.

SSH with the blackberry. There are alot of Third Party Applications for it.
Push (real time) E-Mail only exists on the Blackberry.....Blackberry isn't pretty like the other two phones but it gets the job done. I couldn't live without mine.

I just cannot find any software repository for Blackberry on their website, also using google I found only one SSh client called Idokoroo which costed ~200 bucks.

email is not that important to me, the most important is ssh and ICQ

I use Webmessenger on my BB it handles ICQ, AIM, YAHOO etc...its a good little program.

Try www.RimRoad.com for all third party applications. For RIM applications you'll have to be subscriber specific and they can be found at your cell providers website.

I use the 7520 through Nextel. Its the only current Blackberry with Bluetooth. It is the only Blackberry with a Speakerphone and Nextel's direct connect of course. Nextel is also one of the few companies that allow web access and dial-up access through there Blackberry. If you wanna go HTML on the BB, a 3rd party browser like ReqWireless will let you browse pages at speeds comparable to a 56k modem.

The Nextel 7520 definately has the most bang for the buck. And its smaller than most them too.

Did you know that the nickname "Crackberry" is not a bad one. They call it "Crackberry" because the Blackberry is addictive like crack. Your post is like saying "That Beautiful Chic is Ugly". All the bloggers at the DNC/RNC, all the reporters at the DNC/RNC used Blackberry's... Reception depends on provider...not phone.

Blackberry's are for people who need e-mail first and extra shit second.

i ordered a treo 650 yesterday. i'm still not sure it's the right choice. i also like the blackberry, but it doesn't have 128 bit browser encryption, which i need to do online banking.

I've been doing some checking up myself... I need something I can do some AIM and SSH from when I'm mobile. Quite frankly, NONE of them seem to be up to the task. The blackberry is notoriously slow for any net-related things other than email and the treo is apparently plagued with memory and reboot issues.

Best (paraphrased) quote I saw on one of the review boards somewhere, talking about a new WinCE device from BenQ called the P50 and claiming it'll be a 'treo killer':

"There's nothing about the BenQ that will 'kill' the treo, although it wouldn't be that hard. There's not much that's 'killer' about the treo, it's just the closest thing we have to something decent at the moment. When a really GOOD phone comes, we'll all pounce on it."

Which to me means "Wait for a bit."

after some diging forums, asking people, reading tests and stuff I came up with the following:

blackberry: no real OS, problems getting existing ssh clients connect to servers, as Quiet said no 128encryption for http

treo650: outdated, crashing ssh clients

nokia 9500: has nice Os (symbian) but its huge 15cm while the others are 11cm

This is why I just ordered Nokia 9300 the smaller brother of the 9500 (13cm), its missing wifi and camera which I dont need.

It has speaker phone, and Bluetooth wireless technology. Got a good price on it to.

But am wondering if anyone has one of these and how they like it.

treo 650 is hot. love the blue tooth on it. alot of progs to dl for it. if you want to put aol on it. you can get it for free by going to their uk site and downloading it.

Codename "Charm" a RIM rep let me play with it a couple months before its FCC approval. Its a prettier version of the classic Blackberry. My only beef is that its not a full QWERTY keyboard. But the rep told me as you get used to it, your supposedly able to type faster than a QWERTY.

Hey quiet,

the difference basically is that the TREO does what you call "Polling" for E-mail and "Pulling". This can be accomplished in two ways. Lets use AOL for example.

If I am not signed on to AOL...I will not be aware that I have an E-mail until I log-in using my username and password to check. The TREO "Polls" in pretty much the same way. You can initiate it by accessing the program, the program accesses your mailbox through your username and password and "pulls" the E-Mail down on to your handheld. I believe the TREO does this on its own every 15 minutes or so.

Now Imagine that you have AOL open 24 hours a day, seven days a week non stop. As soon as you were to recieve e-mail you would here the "You've got mail" in real time. Its instant....direct to your computer. No need for username and password because you are already logged in. Essentially that is what the Blackberry service provides.....Always On Push E-Mail. The E-Mail gets "pushed" to your handheld almost instantly. It takes about 2 seconds. Responses about 4 seconds.

The Blackberry also allows you to have multiple POP3 accounts attached to your Web Client and a custom Send Address of your choice that can be changed in 2 seconds. I could spoof [email protected] if i really wanted too.

If all of what I said doesn't matter to you then you definately made the right choice. I just like the whole Always On E-mail.
