At the very begining you had to register domain names through Internic which eventually became networksolutions.
It was $70/year.
There was no one else doing domain registerations till ICANN changed their policies.Comment

Though you could register them with internic/networksolutions, skip paying them the money, use the domain for about 45 days while they sent you payment reminders and then eventually cut it off.
