I think it comes down to an individuals vision of potential, combined with their marketing abilities. Obviously someone who can't market well would not put forth money they don't have confidence in recouping. And someone who doesn't see the potential in a domain name simply won't buy it. The owner has no reason to bother with deceptions. Just like during the recent sale of cams.com, most bidders prefer anonymity. I happen to know 2 of the bidders and if one of them gets the domain it'll be their decision whether to go public or not.
