Not commenting specially on this specific case, tho it's one load of sad shit all round.

But totally agree on your comments DD. Societies are responsible for acts of individuals within their group - one example you already quoted is of the care of mentally ill.

Another example is the always-contraversial pedo crimes. Ask any investigator or "authority" within this field and they will tell you it starts with a vicious circle. Daddy (chances are he was abused as a kid) commits offenses against his children - the children grow up to commit offences against other children.

Basically, societies will generally see the crimes they "enabled" in one form or other whether these are crimes on the high end of the scale or burglary.

A society where details of selected crimes are pulled out, analysed and tried by TV are probably the most crass voyeuristic forms of societies and only ten steps away from a lynch mob. Purported members of the legal profession who release details of crimes to the voyeur public before any trial has even commenced are part of the "legal profession" in name only. There never was any justice system which had trial-by-public-debate.

On the death penalty.. there has to be a balanced and independent justice system to start with. In any justice system, there are excellent jurists, however that does not mean the justice system reaches their standards. The US remains a country who signed a treaty agreeing to terminate executions, but still does not meet the standards to ratify that treaty.

Any society is obliged to step up and take full responsibity for individuals within that society - in all ways. It starts with care of those in need (mental health) to Daddy stopping messing with his children. Any society gets back the seeds they sow.
