    Damn! I was hotlinked by a site BIGGER than thehun... they crashed my server (pic)

    Server crashed just as I sat down at my comp today, turns out about 10 pics from one of my galleries was link hottened by a Chinese forum. They're even bigger than thehun...



    The graphs do not look pretty, my server was pushing 10Mbps before it turned up its toes and died. It was only responding to about 5% of pings with round-trip-times of 30 seconds or greater.



    I've been hotlinked before, but it's never crashed my server. Who would have thought that hotlinking a meg's worth of pics could do it?

                      BTW hotlinking doesn't really bother me, not until now anyway. I usually have plenty of transfer available and I enjoy fucking around with renaming images and sending them back some 'special' ones. It's never crashed a server before...

                                      Nah, there's another prob too, for some reason Apache is not properly recognising a site, instead it's pointing the surfers at another... the log is filled with 404s which execute a script to figure out what to do with the surfer. That's probably why it crashed.

                                              .htaccess is your friend.. Chinese hotlinkers really suck, I remember cutting down at least 2mbit/mo when I finally got my htaccess right. Bastards =/

                                                                                                              That works on IPs and hostnames, which won't block hotlinkers... they come from multiple hosts.

                                                                                                              A deny sends back a 403 response anyway, may as well add a couple of hundred more bytes and make it a cute pic.
