Alberto Korda, the Cuban photographer who took the famous photograph of Che Guevara shown at left... died on May 26, 2001. The Maryland Institute of Art called Korda's photo, "The most famous photograph in the world and a symbol of the 20th century."
Korda snapped the picture of the revolutionary leader in March 1960 at a funeral service for 136 Cubans killed during a counterrevolutionary terrorist attack. Guevara briefly stepped forward onto the memorial service podium... and in that split second, Korda captured this historic image.
The photograph remained unpublished until some 7 years later, when the artist gave a print to an Italian journalist. Upon Che's death in 1967, the print was quickly published as a poster in Italy... but it soon spread all over Europe and beyond. From then on the image was replicated around the world, appearing on murals, flags, buttons, T-shirts, posters, and album covers. Even Andy Warhol profited from Korda's photograph when he printed the image as one of his pop art silk-screen prints (shown directly below). Despite the countless ways in which Korda's image was marketed he never received a single penny in royalties. However, when the Smirnoff Vodka company used Korda's image of Che in a year 2000 advertising campaign, the photographer sued.
Commenting on the illicit use of his photograph, the artist said, "As a supporter of the ideals for which Che Guevara died, I am not averse to its reproduction by those who wish to propagate his memory and the cause of social justice throughout the world, but I am categorically against the exploitation of Che's image for the promotion of products such as alcohol, or for any purpose that denigrates the reputation of Che." Korda successfully won an out-of-court settlement against the Vodka company which netted him around $50,000.
Even Andy Warhol profited from Korda's photograph
The artist donated the money to the Cuban medical system, saying, "If Che were still alive, he would have done the same." Alberto Korda suffered a fatal heart attack while in Paris for an exhibition of his photographic works.

Originally posted by RedShoeOk, actually the most famous photos on the planet are of Jesus. I can't find any recent ones. This one was from an ad he did as a model, previous to his career as a prophet.

might be true, though not a photograph, i have heard the most famous image of all time is the painting of "jesus" painted by an englishman i think.
it is the classic image of a good looking guy with a brown flowing beard and waspy aquiline nose, side view, looking to the left, highlighted from above, i mean really sacred looking
oh well, whatever gets people through the night
truth is, if jesus existed he probably looked like a camel jockey, but that might not sell so many king james versions.Comment

You guys have taken all of mine. My candidate for number 1 is the sailor kissing the girl.
One of the funniest most shocking things I ever saw on TV -- I think it was on Saturday Night Live's "Weekend Update" -- they flashed a picture of the naked Vietnam napalm girl and said something like: "in today's news, Woody Allen is dating again . . ."
HMM, update:
I just looked this up on Google and there's an interview with Norm McDonald saying he didn't get away with making this joke on Saturday Night Live. But I'm sure I saw it somewhere.

"Tin soldiers and Nixon's comingOriginally posted by sarah_webincI am sure this one is too American to be world famous but my mom was there that day so it always sticks with me:
We're finally on our own
This summer I hear the drumming
Four dead in Ohio
Gonna get down to it soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been down long ago
What if you knew her and found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know.
Gonna get down to it soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been down long ago
What if you knew her and found her dead on the ground
How can you run when you know."
Great song.

I agree with you, but I think she was an Afghan girl... I saw a show where the photographer went back to find her.
