Technically not true. Amish do not pay SS taxes and it is completely legal. They won a major court case whereby they argued that their religion forbade any type of "insurance" and that in SS was a type of insurance to them. Amish do not have to pay SS tax and it is 100% legal.

I don't want to perpetuate the myth about Amish not paying any taxes though, that is false. They are still 100% liable for all federal, state and local income taxes. It is only Social Security tax that they can legally not pay.

Of course, when they do "opt out" of social security tax, they are also never elegible for social security benefits. Further they have to live the Amish "lifestyle" if you know what I mean.
