It definitely has its good and bad areas, but it's really changed in the past 10 years. There's more things to do downtown. I wouldn't necessarily call it safe, though.
Pete is right about 8 Mile (the movie). I would say that only 5 minutes of the movie was filmed on 8 mile. There are a few nice strip clubs to go to though.
