More Than 1 in 3 Students Want Gov't Control of Press, Knight Survey Finds

A new survey of 112,003 students released today finds that one in three say the press ought to be more restricted -- and 36% think newspapers should get ?government approval? before stories are published.

Yet, when told of the exact text of the First Amendment, more than one in three high school students said it goes "too far" in the rights it guarantees. Only half of the students said newspapers should be allowed to publish freely without government approval of stories.

Who says kids these days aren't fucked up?

I saw that on the news tonight too, but I remember being pretty stupid when I was in school. It's not until most people get into the real world that they really realize what they support.

I like how 99% of principals disagreed with government censorship of newspapers, but only about 25% of them said controversial school issues should be published in the school newspaper without administrative oversight.

Kids are not stupid. They just have recently realized that people like Dan Rather have been lieing to them to promote their on agenda.

Kids dont like being told what to do. They dont like being tricked.

These results just show that kids want the news to be more regulated to filter out the filthy liberals from lieing to the public.

So you are saying that a moderate news man manufactured a news story and presented to the public in a timely manor that was designed to affect the outcome of an election by hurting the conservative candidate.

Thats actually a felony. Dan Rather should be in jail. I guarantee you that Dan Rather asked his attornies if they thought he would go to jail.

In the main, the media should not be censored.

However, in times of war there does need to be some censorship.
I'm talking, of course, about the staged-for-the-cameras car bombings and the news-from-the-point-of-view-of-the-terrorists in Iraq.

It would have been unthinkable in WW2 for the media to try and legitimise what the enemy were doing.

And look what happened in Vietnam. The USA was not defeated by the Communist enemy - it was defeated from within by it's own media and the effect of that media on the population.

Think about it. The people in Iraq blowing up cars and killing women and children are not called terrorists. The liberal media has labeled them "insurgents" and "freedom fighters".

There is a difference between your general press and your school press.

Kid's freedoms like it or not are limited to some degree especially in school and IMO rightly so...and I'm pretty fucking liberal.

The reason is they are "children," learning to be adults, and don't necessarily have the skills to self regulate. It's not to say that adults always do, but they have at least reached the age of reasoning, and can be held legally responsible for whatever actions they take.

Let kids be kids, and learn to interact at appropriate social levels, they will soon be old enough to live dreary deliberate lives working for the man.
