I use free hosts a lot. They are great for testing sites, niches, galleries, new programs and most importantly - for me - search engines. I try all kinds of tricks and things to see if a page can rank well and not get dumped. If it gets banned by Google/Yahoo, etc. - so what? It's a free site. I would never try that for a domain I paid for (the hosting fee is incidental).
Also you can grab some crazy SE traffic just by setting up a quickie subdomain on a free host and getting lucky for a hot keyword-of-the-month (think "ass girl", for example). It's quicker, less admin, and less cost than looking for and buying a domain, setting up a host account, transfering domain etc. etc. I think of them as throw-away sites, no mess, no fuss.
So far I've done very well this way and have no intention of stopping. I use paid domains (like the one in my sig) for the more serious stuff.
I'm not cheap, I'm not (too) lazy, I'm just realistic. Free hosts are worth something and it's not entirely because they're free ... Adult webmasters who believe they are "superior" by using only paid domains/hosts (and my implication, I am inferior for using free hosts) are ignorant or just blindly following the crowd.
(On a side note: Link lists, galleries, etc. I understand their objection to listing free sites, this is not a shot at their position - just the people who come to boards like this and trash free hosts and those that use them)
