    but it was hardly sharp enough for johnny to cut ponyboy's hair with it.....

                                                  You can stab someone to death with a butterknife but good luck cutting hair (or anything else) with it.

                                                  Knifes generally stab not cut hence...So and so was stabbed yesterday instead of so and so was cut yesterday.
