    Police: Boys plotted school massacre
Boys, ages 14 to 16, are charged under post-9/11 terror law

    Thursday, April 6, 2006; Posted: 3:55 p.m. EDT (19:55 GMT)

CAMDEN, New Jersey (AP) -- Four teenagers accused of plotting to kill about 25 people in a lunch-period massacre at a high school were charged Thursday under a terrorism law created after the September 11 attacks.

The boys, ages 14 to 16, were arrested Wednesday after police heard about the alleged plot from administrators at the school, where three of the teens are students. Their names were not released because of their ages.

Authorities said the teens planned to attack students, teachers and others at Winslow Township High.

The four boys appeared in family court, and a judge ordered them held for psychiatric evaluations.

The father of one of the boys said the charges were a mistake: "I think it's just kids hanging out together and having a little wild time, that's all."

Authorities said the boys did not have any weapons to carry out the alleged plot. But one law enforcement official who spoke on the condition of anonymity said they tried to buy a handgun.

The charges are serious enough that prosecutors could ask a judge to move the case to adult criminal court. Prosecutors have 30 days to consider.

No one in New Jersey has been convicted under the terrorism law, which carries a mandatory minimum of 30 years in prison without parole.

I'm not sure I understand your stance on this, but are you saying that they should not be arrested because they didn't do it yet?

During my teen years, I and my friends planned several dozens of terrorist attacks, bank robberies, plots for world domination, bombings on school buildings, armed rebellions against the government, and tons of other things, none of which we ever seriously thought about doing.

But in any of those cases, did you go try to buy dynamite to blow up a safe, a laserbeam that can scratch your ass from space, dynamite to blow up your school, one thousand AK-47s or anything else that would faciliate the actualization of an anarchistic fantasy?

That's not a thought crime, that's a conspiracy... which could technically be used against them.

Charging 14 year old boys with terrorism-related crimes seems ludicrous though (even given most of the 14 year old boys we've all known!)

I am with punkworld on this.
As a youth I did a whole lot of plotting, planning, and indepth thought about assorted crimes. Just never the actual follow through of them *exceptions may apply*.

I did not try to buy a gun since I already had them.
I did not attempt to purchase bomb making supplies since the school provided them *see exception.
I did not drug my baby sitter even though I had everything lined up.
The list could go on and on.

All due respect Aly, does that mean we should start wiretapping the events they plot out when their GI Joes fight each other for fear that they might be using those as models for something else?

What should be looked at here is them trying to buy a gun and get them on that rather than what "might" have been talked about. Moving to action should be under scrutiny, talking about it is somethign esle. And for all we know the two could be unrelated.

                        I dunno...

I agree. Thoughcrime, conspiracy, they're basically the same thing.

Using the new "terrorism" rules basically makes a mountain out of a molehill in this situation. If they gotta bust 'em, then charge 'em with Conspiracy which is punishable by up to 5 years in prison. If even 1 kid made one half assed attempt to further the "plot", then they can all be charged with the conspiracy, and whatever crime they were trying to commit.
I think they're blowin it out of proportion anyways, they know dam well those kids aren't terrorists.

                              Especially not an actual terrorist.

Oh don't worry about the patriot act, it will only be used against actual terrorists......riiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

we've had a couple of arrests here in MA for the same thing...just didn't make national news because i guess there were more important things to talk about at that time.

I saw this news item a little bit differently - not as a comparison to "1984" but as a statement on why shit like this happens. Just read the father's statement - parents are so ignorant of what their kids are up to until it's too late. I think many times, willfully ignorant which is worse.

Imagine what this father would be saying IF the kids did go on a killing spree?

I plan total world domination every day. I even attempt it sometimes. WTF, give the kids a break, they are just being kids.

I don't think they are terrorists, of course. Also, I don't know the details. I mean, if they had two dozen pipe bombs ready to go and a few thousand rounds of ammo, then I think it was prudent to arrest them for a conspiracy to commit a crime.

I don't know what it is, but in the last 20 years there has been a growth of "I'm pissed off so I'm going to take out everybody instead of just killing myself, so I can get on TV". We didn't have these crazy mass shootings when I was growing up. It seems like it all got started with the postal workers back in the 80's. WTF?

To plan mass murders is NOT NORMAL thinking I dont know what the fuck some of you are talking about. Its a sick person to actually try and plan something like that(even so much as trying to buy a gun to do the job), the parents are obviously at fault here. Those who make excuses that this is NORMAL to think like that is absurd, you people need to talk to some shrinks.
