actually I was thinking if studio 8 met your needs you could go with sony movie studio . Its based on the same engine as vegas, costs 100 bucks and you can even edit hd on it.Comment

Adobe Premiere or FinalCut Pro seems to be what a lot of pros use.
As mentioned, Vegas is probably the best bang for the buck though, and easiest to get the hang of.
