Should you be concerned about this apparent gap in your education, Google has 3½ million references to that particular discussion and among them you would certainly learn about the National Defense Authorization Act passed into law by a bi-partisan vote in October 2000. Among other things that act declared that the military commanders on Hawaii were denied crucial military intelligence that tracked the Japanese forces toward Hawaii.

Congress was very specific in finding that the 1941 White House cut the local commanders off from information which would have warned them about the advancing Japanese forces. Despite this, after the successful Japanese raid, both commanders were blamed for failing to ward off the attack and relieved of their commands.
