I usually get one of these when I go to the US.. I then continue on to the UK then south easy asia, then home. Most will require you to continue your trip in the same direction, and not backtrack. Last one i did was Brisbane - LA - Miami internext and then went to London, Amsterdam, then home via Dubai, and Singapore.. was about $3300AU ($2350US)
I have backtracked before on a RTW ticket and they allowed it (as it was the only way of getting to my next destination) they charged me a bit extra though.
