I understand your approach but you don't have to be aggressive when you approach the guy and tell him to quit acting the fool. If it escalates from there then so be it but bro, you gotta step up and do what's right. After the first advance if you would have confronted him chances are he would have simply backed off.
I'm not a female so this might not be true but I always believed that women wanted strong men that stood up for them. In her eyes you might be a bigger chump for not stepping up and defending her.
