    Won't people just get pinned or crushed against them when the wave comes in? Not to mention the trees will be toppled, not like sand is strong enough to hold a tree...

              Not exactly, lots of trees over the coast will help reduce damages of future tsunamis, since it will loose power..

              problem is the time its needed before those trees get BIG!

                  Did you read that story? They want to put the trees on the coast for two reasons, one so people don't live there, and two so it slows down the water heading inland to the villages.
