    Should female tennis players get paid the same as men...

    when they only play best of 3 in the major tournaments, and the men play best of 5?

    Most women I know say obviously not, but a couple of them truly believe they should split the prize money evenly between men and women.

    To me, that's like saying a women should be paid the same salary as a man, but she only has to work 6 hours a day, while the man has to work 8 hours a day.

    Not meaning to sound sexist in the least btw. If they played best of 5, then they SHOULD split the prize money 50/50.

                                  If they play matches of the same duration then personally I think that would be cool. However the other thing to consider is that the womens game doesnt have the pull of the mens. Its like the Olmypics 100m final. The mens race is probably the ultimate event at the games, whereas the womens simply isnt nowhere near it.

                                                          Women don´t bring as much money/viewers than men do. They play less time. Games are much easier for them, the top ten usually smoke the rest in a heartbeat, when in men´s tennis number 1 can have a hard time beating number 80 (or not, but it happens), so tournaments are much tougher to them, as a result they have to choose to play less or get injured constantly. So to me is a big fat NO. And I have nothing against women in sports, but I just don´t think it´s fair

It shouldn't have anything to do with how hard they play, how many sets, how many tournaments, etc. If they draw, if they can seel tickets, sell advertising, then they will demand more and should get it. Luckily it is a capitalistic market and tournaments offer a purse. If that purse is too low players won't show up... and if that purse is large enough the top players come!

                                                                                  Simple as that.

                                                                                          I agree with that, but this is the problem.

                                                                                          I could be mistaken, but MY understanding of how tickets are sold at these events, is week or day passes. Not match passes.

                                                                                          So who the hell knows who they're paying to see.

                                                                                          If you look at the demographics, odds are the Sharapova's and Kournikova's are selling lots of tickets, but when you can't be sure, it's not fair that the men have to work harder to get paid the same.

                                                                                          If you were working on a project with a co-worker where you submitted one report, and you both put in the same time, should you be paid the same (assuming experience, loyalty and tenure are equal)? Of course.

                                                                                          Should you still be paid the same when the other person leaves every afternoon at 2 and you still work till 5? I don't think so.

                                                                                                                          To me, female athletes should be paid in proportion to the amount of money they bring in. For instance, the WNBA players should not be paid anywhere near the same amount of money as NBA players because they don't generate nearly the same in revenue.

The women regularly pull as many, if not more, viewers then the men. They also sell just as many, if not more tickets. They do play shorter matches though, that is true. When you look at the ratings for the last US open. the mens final drew a 2.5 the women's a 2.2 neither match had an american in it. If say Serana or Venus Williams or Capriatti were in the final they could have pulled around 3.5-4.0 and crushed the men. The women's ratings have been falling some in the last couple of years since Hingis stopped playing and the williams sisters don't play as much and Anns kept getting hurt, they lost a lot of the personalities in the game but when all of them were playing regularly a few years ago the often beat the men in the ratings and outdrew them in ticket sales.

                                                                                                                              To me the money isssue is about draw. If they sell as many tickets and get as good of ratings they should get the same amount of money as the guys. It doesn't matter if they play shorter matches.

                                                                                                                                              Females do everything better then men. In sports they're equal, in sex they're better, in working they do everything men can do or even better and lots of women make more money then men do doing the same thing, in keeping a house together (like cleaning, cooking, doing laundry, running errands, taking care of the kids and many more) they're the best. And the most powerful thing in the world is done by women as well, and that's having a baby. Can men do all of these? Oh yeah, their good in sports.

                                                                                                                                                                  the problem is that the gender (female) does not support itself ... MOST men watch sports ... so they watch guy-sports. So, guy sports do well as do male athletes.

                                                                                                                                                                  MOST women do not, watch sports, so their sports suffer at the hands of their own gender.

                                                                                                                                                                  That has zero to do with serving speed and etc - MHO
