On leadership and our role under it [RANT]

You were the last high. Hiiiiigh, Hiiiiigh, High. I like the Dandy Warhols, they make good songs for commercials. I needed an opener since the rest is pretty stale.

The nature of not only contemporary society but all that preceded was that of domination of the vast majority of the population by a few who took or were elected to power. The alpha male. Almost all species of mammals have a similar structure to their societies in that there are those that are given power by those that will not take it. They are given authority over the lives of all others in their community. They are tasked with the responsibility to create and enforce rules that govern behavior. There are those that accept it because of a need for the structure. They want to maintain a community because of the security it provides. By security I don?t mean to defend against an aggressor. This is not normally a consideration. No, the security a community provides it to allow individuals within it to create their own sense of self. They discover that they can achieve goals. They believe that the appointed betters of a community serve a role. They believe that they provide structure so that each individual can achieve his or her own goals.

Acceptance of the alpha male is not the result of the domination of an individual or group that is stronger than all others over the community. The alpha male exists to provide the framework for individuals within the community to achieve their own self interest. It provides the means with which greed can flourish. There is no need to challenge for dominance, especially when favour is granted. The need for not only acceptance but also a sense of superiority will satisfy - on a superficial level - all goals of those the favour has been granted to. To be an effective leader you do not need to be stronger than the rest; you just need to be recognized as important by a significant amount of people in your community. Assigning importance is, well, important. It provides us with a way of qualifying the various aspects of our lives. It allows for a categorization of what is generally accepted to be valuable by the majority in a community. Once importance has been assigned it can be used to gain status; it can by used to set yourself apart from all others. It allows for a selfish sense of superiority over others who were once seen as peers. To gain or maintain the status of alpha male one must only have importance assigned to oneself and reinforce it associating yourself with others that have a need to have superiority or control over others. To accomplish this quickly, and effictively as history notes repeatedly, you need simply to use greed.

This post wasn't as popular as my other one. I guess I didn't hit enough hot button issues. Maybe I should have sexed it up a bit.

Damn, pretty deep there and with truth to boot! Whether this was meant as a rant or not, I think that you made some very valid points and have hit upon the core structure of society in general. Very Nice
