i use yahoo to search for my domains because they have a handly little tool that reccomended domains with smiliar keywords when one is taken. helps give me good ideas.

there is no way by chance someone just happened to register this domain after i searched for it and found it available yesterday.

Yes, that is happening, unfortunately. Some registrars are doing it also.

Yea that used to happen to me all the time, with multiple registrars... thats why now whenever I search a domain and its available I take it right then.

what is the point? are they hoping to snatch some traffic domains? or that i'll buy it off them? glad i always register domains before i start the projects.

i guess it is my own fault for not grabbing it, but i didn't think YAHOO would be giving up my results.

Looking for hidden gems like everyone else. I've had it happen to me also. I used to do my type-in searches, write them all down in a list and then take time to decide which ones I really wanted. Then I noticed I'd go back and some would be taken. It happened more than once so the odds have to be such that someone was watching what domains I searched for availability and then reg'd any good ones.

Now I make short list groups and then quickly reg them within minutes.

Someone needs to start flooding WHOIS services with shitty domain lookups. Use adult keywords and look up domains like cockanaltitties.com.. only a few thousand at a time. That should help.

That domain had already been registered at least once back in 2004 and expired. So there is a way by chance that someone would happen to register that domain. If you had registered that domain, perhaps the person that actually registered it would be saying to himself, "no way by chance someone would just happen to register this domain".

ok, the ones I checked that were available yesterday are still available now. I used Win32Whois to do my checking however. I'm going to check the same names through Whois.sc and compare results again tomorrow. I'm going to check 10 new names through Godaddy, and a different 10 through Yahoo.

Should be simple enough to confirm this no ?

I've never had this problem, but I don't search at the normal places. I do believe this problem exists and is real however.

Depends. Human eyes probably go over them before they're actually regged. So if you search for dsfhjsidfji333sad.com or other crap domains that they don't see potential in, they probably won't get regged.

                                          The Truth:

Registrars usually are given a 5 day grace period on domains. Whenever someone searches for domain availability, but doesnt add them to the website's shopping cart, the registrar(the bad ones) will register the domain to see if its getting any typeins or hits from somewhere. If it is, they keep it, if it isnt, then they drop it within that 5 days at no charge to them.

bingo, some are using this loophole on hundreds of thousands of domains daily, it's insane.

Never had this happen through DirectNIC. Just saying.

A handy tip to everyone: NEVER use the registrars' "check if domain is available" feature. There's better ways to find out.

I used Go Daddy this past weekend to search for some potential domain names, mostly adult-related, but also some non-adult ones, too--within two days of emailing my Go Daddy account Executive to purchase registrations for the 139 new ones I selected (to my already-existing account of 702 other domains I've previously registered) all 841 showed up in my account. I'm happy at GoDaddy!

Same here, I create a text file of domains I would like and paste them all into enoms bulk register page, hit the button and the ones that are available are purchased and added to my account and the taken one are just dropped.

                                                        I never search availability anymore

I've had this happen as well. So I wrote my own tool and I do partial searches instead, write down the the ones I want and go back when I'm ready to buy it. Since I never searched for the exact domain, no one can reg it before I do.
