Actually, there are a few swedish companies developing a vaccination and antibody-based drugs against HIV; http://www.bioinvent.com is one of them. http://www.medivir.com/OuterFrameEng.asp is another Swedish company.

Below are a few of the HIV Drugs in Clinical Development (taken from Medivir homepage):

      Compound Phase Originator Licencee
      PolymeraseInhibitor NNRTI
      Emivirine III Mitsubishi Triangle/Abbott
      Capravirine III Shionogi Pfizer
      DPC-083 II Du-Pont
      TMC-120 II Tibotech
      TMC-125 II Tibotech Johnson&Johnson
      DPC-961 I Du-Pont
      MIV-150 I Medivir Chiron

      Polymerase
      Inhibitor NRTI
      Emtricitabine III Emory Triangle/Abbott
      Amdoxovir/DAPD II Emory Triangle/Abbott
      MIV-310 II Medivir
      Ach-126443 I Yale Achillion Pharma

      ProteaseInhibitor
      Fosamprinovir III Vertex GSK
      Atazanavir III Novartis BMS
      Tipranavir II Pharmacia Corp Boehringer-Ingelheim
      TMC-114 II Tibotech
      AG-1776 I Japan Energy Agouron/Pfizer

      * NRTI ? nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors;the most common nucleoside analogues include AZT,ddl,D4T,ddC and 3TC. NNRTI ? non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, also known as allosteric inhibitors, including drugs such as Viramune, Rescriptior and Sustiva, the market leader.

http://www.tripep.se/eng/ is another swedish company focusing on:
? research and clinical development of alpha-HGA, an HIV-inhibiting drug,
? preclinical research focusing on the development of therapeutic and prophylactic vaccines against HIV and Hepatitis C,

Avaris - http://www.avaris.se - another company working on a new type of Hiv-vaccination with a totally new mechanism. Unfortunaly, they are running out of funds

Seems like there are plenty of companies, the questions is how long they have come?

Two very simple things to point out.

            1. The US government and pharmaceutical companies are not the only governments and pharmaceutical companies in the world looking for a cure. Get a grip please

            2. Supposing Im wrong and no one else in the world is looking for a cure. Then keeping something like this a secret would take 1000's of people from government people to doctors from not talking. Now this is where the theory falls down, for two main reasons. Most doctors are doctors because they want to cure people. If they had cured aids they would tell people. But more importantly. I have never met one American who can keep their mouth shut about anything. Let alone 1000's of Americans all keeping their mouths shut about the biggest medical breakthrough in history. Not gonna happen

Well you are wrong. There has not been a disease cured in over 50 years, and there have not been any major medical breakthroughs since, why is that? With all the technological advances nothing has happened except more ways to treat disease. It is a million times more profitable to treat than cure. The people in the know realize if a major disease such as cancer was cured it would literally destroy the economy. One of two things happen when someone is on the verge of a cure, either the drug companies buy the research rights and can it or they are simply labeled a quack.

What you ARE saying is that "this is nature's way of thinning the herd." And I do not buy that.

The drugs, called DAPYs, mimic the virus by changing shape, which enables them to interfere with the way HIV attacks the immune system.

Tests conducted in conjunction with Johnson & Johnson have shown the drugs to be easily absorbed with minimal side effects.

They also can be taken in one pill, in contrast to the drug cocktails currently taken by many AIDS patients.

A research team led by Rutgers chemist Eddy Arnold prepublished details of the most promising of the three drugs, known as R278474, last month in the electronic edition of the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.

The research has targeted reverse transcriptase, a submiscroscopic protein composed of two coiled chains of amino acids. It is considered HIV's key protein.

"Reverse transcriptase is very important in the biology of AIDS," said Stephen Smith, the head of the department of infectious diseases at St. Michael's Medical Center in Newark.

"If you can really inhibit reverse transcriptase, you can stop AIDS."

The optimism about R278474 stems from its potential to interfere with an enzyme that the virus needs to copy and insert itself into a human cell.

Remember when the pronouncement was made that we had wiped out small pox? Now, they're think EVERYONE should get vaccinated for it in case of terrorist attacks.

Yep. Another example of how fear is used to create profit.
