guys, do you throw out "bro" to just about anyone?

Seems that the term has evolved.. especially around here. First it was something that one guy would call another guy that he knew rather well.

Then it turned into something that one guy would call another guy if he wanted to suck up for what ever reason... I guess you could call it a term of respect.. I say it's a "he's important, I'm going to sound like I know him" kind of term.

Now it just seems that I see guys calling other guys "bro" despite having never met the guy or anything. They just say it... I guess to sound cool or something.

Here's a hint... if it's really blatantly obvious that you don't know the guy, and you call them "bro"... you don't look cool, you don't look like an ass kisser... you just look like you're trying to hard, and that's not usually a good thing.

I have been using "guy". Like, "Thanks guy". Slightly more personal and not as touchy as bro.

That's what you say to someone when you are trying to make them feel "little" or "younger" or what ever. It's supposed to make you goliath and them david. What they don't realize is that david owned goliath.

your right Stuart, I have only said Bro to one person in this industry.....that man has slept on my couch and has helped me double my business in the matter of a couple months.

if i feel the need to be frienly without proper knowledge of said guy, I use the word buddy.....

I prefer to use God with those that are close to me. "Whassup God? Or son works just as well. "Whaddup Sun?" Depending on the level of prominance the person holds in my life. When Speaking to Ron levi I usually say "Whaddup God?" But when speaking to sales rep #1229182...

If I choose to vary my greetings I may say "Whaddup dun?" Or "Whaddup Sun Dun?" Sometimes "Sun Dun Dun" is more fitting. It is a classier and more affectionate way of saying you are my bro.

(at least that's all true in Queensbridge)

Calling someone son is more paternal than biblical. Even if it were not, using the stories of an ancient book and thinking they really happened literally and apply to modern life is just a little bit jeuvenile. No water was turned to wine, the Red Sea was not parted and Jesus didn't rise from his grave.

The story of david versus Goliath is meant to give the little guy hope. In reality, the Smurfs is closer to the truth; Even when all 100 smurfs band together, they can only hope to escape from Gargamel, never to defeat him.

I am an american and it's irritating to me also. I think 90% of the people who've used the word 'bro' in conversation with me have eventually tried pulling some type of scam/deception at some point.

What does being a non American have to do with anything? The first people I heard calling everybody Bro were actually Dutch. I don't think it's specifically an American thing.

well, sorry then, didn't find anything about that in world history books...

people who called me "bro" were american or canadian mostly, that's how "I" experienced it. And "I" was irritated in the beginning, cause no one called me his "Bro" before. Even not the dutch people, who are my neighbour country.

And coming from a country where you rarely call someone by his first name before you know him for a while, it's a bit unusal to be called "bro" out of nowhere...

                                            my personal thoughts...

Sometimes I use "Bro Bro". A double "bro" with the people I know and like.
"bro" with the people I don't know to well.

There's always Hi Man or Hey Guy! But that's plain boring.

I agree... Most of the time it sounds dumb if you don't know the guy.

I do it. I'm sure it depends where you're from. If you need to get so culturally biased because a person grew up using the term 'bro', because it's prevalent and acceptable in their environment then you've got bigger issues with yourself to deal with. I can see it especially if your phrase suits using the persons name but don't especially know it or want to use it.

Example; your nick is CumSwapper. "You around Cumswapper?" or "You around bro?" Considering you grew up using 'bro' and it's used by everyone else in your environment, you go with it. If someone else considers it ignorant, or other.. that's just unfortunate.

Hardly... just making an observation. I used to study trends in language, terminology that people would pick up on and use over and over again without really realizing it... such as "like"... "I was like, discuss the weather when he just cut me off like what he had to say was so important and he was all like, whatever"

So yeah, I notice these things in society and take interest. The last funny one was "oh snap" that people seemed to use to sound cooler.
