I have to disagree with that. It will undermine him entirely.
The worst thing a boss can do to an employee is question their judgement in front of other people. Question them privately, berate them privately, disagree with them privately and tell them they're wrong...PRIVATELY. But publicly he MUST side with TexasDreams or what will happen next time ANYONE questions his judgement?
"I'm gonna tell Lensman on you."
And imagine the wisecracks for a guy with a tough job already. He could get gunshy about his job and wouldn't be able to perform the job to the best of his ability out of fear of being humiliated publicly.
Had he apologized on his own before Lensman told him to do so (total speculation on that), people could write him off as a hothead, but also know that he had the full backing of his employer. So, little harm done. But it has escalated too far. If he apologizes publicly, no matter what Lensman says publicly and whether it's true or not, everyone will assume Lensman made him do it.
