The future never really happens as it's thought to.

I was just thinking about Back to the Future II.

In 2015 they had flying cars, talking, self-adjusting jackets with dryers, Mr. Fusion, Hoverboards, dehydrated foods that re-hydrate in a special appliance.

Only 9 years to go until 2015 and little of that seems possible.

However, when 2015 was 30 years away, it not only seemed possible, it seemed likely.

    Am I alone on this?

These scenarios continually present themselves in Science Fiction. They make assumptions and predictions about the future which are agressive, only to see that time come and few if any of the predictions, assumptions are true.

I'm a huge proponent of technology and challenging the status-quo.

I guess the eternal question is that, does technology really make our lives better, easier?

It all depends on how much more info we get from the crashed ship they have at Area-51.

I've forgotten the source but I read a few days ago that, compared to 50 years ago, on a weekly basis modern labour saving devices save us doing the physical exertion equivalent to running a marathon.

People always think that 30 years is a long time, but it is really not. Back To The Future should have been set in 2250.

There is an inherent resistence to changing the status quo and this fact is apparent throughout history. Which is why we are somewhat resistant to change.

Big societal changes are gradual but changes do and will happen.

just take this lyrics of a song by Zager and Evans as an example

                  In the year 2525
                  If man is still alive
                  If woman can survive
                  They may thrive
                  In the year 3535
Ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lies
Everything you think, do, and say
Is in the pill you took today

                  In the year 4545
Ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need your eyes
You won't find a thing to chew
                  Nobody's gonna look at you

                  In the year 5555
Your arms are hanging limp at your sides
Your legs got nothing to do
Some machine is doing that for you

                  In the year 6565
Ain't gonna need no husband, won't need no wife
You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too
From the bottom of a long glass tube' Whoooa

                  In the year 7510
If God's a-comin' he ought to make it by then
Maybe he'll look around himself and say
Guess it's time for the Judgement day

                  In the year 8510
God is gonna shake his mighty head then
He'll either say I'm pleased where man has been
Or tear it down and start again

                  In the year 9595
I'm kinda wondering if man is gonna be alive
He's taken everything this old earth can give
And he ain't put back nothing

                  Now it's been 10,000 years
Man has cried a billion tears
                  For what he never knew
                  Now man's reign is through
                  But through eternal night
                  The twinkling of starlight
                  So very far away
                  Maybe it's only yesterday

                  In the year 2525
                  If man is still alive
                  If woman can survive
                  They may thrive
                  In the year 3535

That also has alot to do with the fact that each and single one of the advances actualy means our stay in Earth is getting shorter.

In 50 years it will all happen, except maybe the hoverborad which is all I really want out of the stuff mentioned above. Damnit.
