Staying on a certain i.p. for along time can help, having that i.p. be by itself does not.

I love it when hosting companies say it is a myth. There is only one reson for that. Self preservation.
You can share an IP, but you had better make sure it has no relationship at all with the other sites.
For instance, apples and oranges should not share the ssame IP. Dogs and cats should not share the same IP. Apples and dogs can share it, but they can not have a common site that they interlink to.
Ideally, every site has its own IP, but that is not always possible, so just make sure that the sites do not share a common theme, and there is no interlinking between them.
