What is an Artist?

To me an artists is someone who creates something that entertains, enlightens, challenges, infuriates or otherwise causes an emotional reaction in someone.

i think i am an artist when i have the time for it. but truly an artist is someone who if they could would create artwork (whatever it may be) and do it for the love of doing it rather than the compensation or accolades.

What is art? This is a difficult question. Sometimes art is as simple as drawing a red square? But is it really a masterpiece? A person that's not a genius would not understand it.

Example:
Kasimir Malewitsch, Red square (pictorial realism of a farmer woman in two dimensione)•, 1915, Oil on canvas, 53 x 53 cm, Loaned by Staatliches Russisches Museum, St. Petersburg, ? Staatliches Russisches Museum, St. Petersburg.

I'm actually more concerned with what people think an "artist" is than what "art is" for obvious reasons...

Black and white photographs are art. Ask anyone who shoot b&w and they'll tell you, "If it's black and white, it must be art". Really.

I always thought black and white photographs were just a way of making a minger look half decent.

What is an Artist?
Someone that makes something that serves no useful physical purpose but other people desire it for its aesthetic qualities.

So an artist that design cars... Their output serves no physical useful purpose? What about the artist that creates a logo? How about the artist that designs a building?
