You should look into doing pilates. I used to have lower back problems. Took a fe pilates classes and started exercising the transversus abdominus (this is the muscle that's pretty much central to all pilates exercises) at home. You don't even need to do anything to exercise it. Simply engaging it and holding it for a while each day is enough to strengthen it. I haven't had any back problem since. Definitely worth your time to get some one on one with a pilates instructor.
