they do it because the more readers they have the more they charge for advertising. i think they might send older issues too. either way its free and you cant complain.

I haven't paid for a Magazine in years.

I get Stuff, Maxim, FHM, Details, Playboy and Entertainment Weekly. Haven't paid for one single subscription.

How does this work for these magazine companies? Are they just padding their subsciption numbers in order to boost ad rates?

Without a doubt. I'm going to guess it costs next to nothing to print these mags, and it isn't like the writers are all that great. I don't read them on a regular basis but there is little in them over an 8th grade reading level.

Plus, the entire thing is an advertisement. Beyond the actual ads, all the product reviews and such are probably paid for as well. "Top 10 Electric Shavers for Men 2004" ....if nothing else, the manufacturers are giving them the hardware, product descriptions, etc. But I would imagine that they also pay to have their products featured in the magazine.

I'm sure it's an interesting business.

Another example are these car & truck shows on some stations. They work on old cars, new cars, trucks... outfit them when hot rod parts or lift kits. It's 23 minutes of commercials, broken up by paid advertisements. All the products they feature in the show are paying for the show to use their products.
