Cheap ass Designers...

As most of my friends know, and a lot of others know I do a lot of shit dirt cheap!! I've learned a lot over the past few days/weeks.. Sitting back looking at different designs I've done then going way out of my way to please a client doing extra shit to make them happy doesn't work out too well... Ex Yesterday finished up a design of a paysite... everything was going great client liked the design * personally I didn't like it * But the client was the one paying so I was going by his directions. Complete Paysite $200.00 half way through he throws in extra shit, Can you make me this flash logo, a few galleries and my phat ass was yes sir no problem sir would you like a blow job with that order too??

So I did it, well he was happy with it all.. then a few hours later comes back says sorry dude I've shown 5 others the design and they didn't like it. Lets forget about the design and stay in touch!! I'm like wtf??? Wasted a whole day just to get slapped in the face! Ole well lesson learned AGAIN!!

I don't know why I allow people to walk over me like I do which suxs..
So now that my rant is over this is my new years goal!

Stop doing shit so cheap, stop letting people walk all over me. The biggest thing I learned thought is.... WHEN SOMEONE PAYS YOU CHEAP YOU DON'T PUT ALL YOUR HEART INTO IT... It's the old saying you get what you pay for. Not no more with me.. I guess I'm just blowing off some steam but hope other designers that go real cheap looks at this post and thinks before doing it dirt cheap! Since I was running a special till Xmas I'm going to stay with that special but Dec 26 1201 am 2004 NO MORE !!!

You do realize that you're ruining it for those who are trying to make a living doing design work, right?

Even the asian outsourcing outfits can't do it at that price, and they most definitely wouldn't do it without being paid for it.

Yes But it will always still be up to the client... Just cause I dont like something don't mean it wont convert etc... *shrugs* BTW Folks this was for the paysite the video trailers I do are excluded from this.. The ones that have ordered galleries from me this week and last is excluded I don't mind doing bulk orders of galleries for a reduced price this was mainly a paysite I did for someone..

I have used many design companies over the years and with all of them I do the same thing.

* Send a detailed description of what I am after and ask for quote.
* If never used company pay 50% deposit on work.
* If I remember that I need additional work done, I expect to pay for it. Sometimes if it is not much work I get it for free...

When I have used a company a number of times I usally just pay on completion of work, also don't bother with quote as know what they charge....

I have had design companies ask for full payment upfront in the past and if that is the case I won't do business with them. Trust goes both ways...

Moral of your post, KNOW THE VALUE OF YOUR TIME.

I wouldn't put the blame completely on yourself. You're a good guy and perhaps a bit "too good" in some cases.

It sucks when people take advantage of this, so you've GOT to look out for Number 1...YOU!

Thanks but candyflip I aint no saint I've fucked up orders before etc.. there are a few people that wont ever do biz with me cause of that... you live you learn *shrugs*

1st : Get pre paid . unless it's an old client and I know he's not cheap, I've always got 100 % pre paid . no matter what . I'm easy on the refounds, but I'm certainly not loosing money paying employes when the client didn't give the right directions

2nd : Stop working cheap . Period . You won't make yourself a name doing 20 $ logos anyway

Adult design has gone to shit along with the lowball design prices...and it shows almost everywhere you look (except the quality programs out there who still know the value of a decent design to their bottom line). $200 for a paysite design?

I never whored myself out to ANYONE and it paid off with a 6-figure/year mainstream design gig with excellent benefits including no premiums for my medical and dental. 8 hour days...PERIOD and never am I asked for more than 40 hours a week. And we hit the titty bars harder than anyone in adult...champagne room every visit.

No one will ever take ANY designer seriously who doesn't charge what the job is worth so if cheap-ass designers want to always charge rediculously low prices, let them. But don't expect greater things to come. You label yourself as basically not worth crap the second you start undercutting to the point where there is no point in doing the work at all. And if you're in it for the T & A, I am seeing WAY more in real life from my mainstream job than you might be seeing on your PC monitor...and the best part is I have tons of time to enjoy it. I don't have to work 16 - 20 hour days to break even on my bills

BTW...we're hiring software writers who are proficient in C, C++ as well as server side code (php, asp, jsp, javascript). REDICULOUS salary to start. Must work inhouse and relocate to SE TX (ALL expenses paid). I did and it was worth it. [email protected]
