So much for Bush's tax cuts

"WASHINGTON - If it seems like your taxes have been going up, they probably have ? at least at the state level.

State taxpayer burdens increased by an average of 41 percent from 1994 to 2004, according to newly released data from the Census Bureau. Only one state, Alaska, saw the amount it collects per person decline.

Even when the numbers are adjusted for inflation, the individual tax burdens increase in 43 states."

Common sense can tell you this would happen. Cuts federal taxes for the rich thus you cut money you give to the states to pay for these tax cuts then the states RAISE taxes( mostly on the poor ) to get that money back. Der duh! So Bush can say he cut taxes when quite the opposite is true.

Bush doesn't include the poor when he refers to tax cuts. To him they don't exist, they're like monkeys in the zoo to him.

Are you obtuse? Try reading. They are comparing 2004 to 1994( ie BEFORE Bush ) however1994 is when the REPUBLICANS took over the US Congress and most of the leglislators of the states.

That sounds a little misleading, wasn't inflation from 1994 to 2004 about 40% too? so really all this means that the state tax rate was growing slightly faster than inflation... or am I missing something?

The poor do not pay income taxes. Throw your state reps out of office for raising taxes.

They'll close state service offices if they dont get the money. Some small cities around me have had to close DMV offices and other such state services and lay off employees due to money shortages.

So it's not as easy as just voting people out who raised state taxes.

Oh no, the DMV shut down!!! Jeez, please shut it down. I bet there is some waste that they could eliminate in the DMV and all the other bullshit pork, red tape creating offices.

This is not just a problem in the USA, in Canada we've been having major problems with getting taxes to pay for all of the social programs. We get taxed on our income, we get taxed on what we spend, we get taxed on our property, we get taxed on our investments -- there is a government hand out every time we do anything that involves cash or property.

Here we've been seeing our discretionery income shrink every year to practically non-existant; the everyday folk don't have enough cash to cover their living expenses, let alone go out to dinner or the occasional movie every once in a while. And at the same time we've seen our service levels go down -- increased wait times at hospitals, fewer things covered by Medicare, the introduction of user fees for basic health care.

Pretty soon this whole system will collapse because the poor just won't have anything left to give the government. It's the same old story -- the rich billionaires who actually run the show keep bleeding the poor people dry of all their cash and morale so that they can keep making more money for themselves.

With something like this, you need to start with the people at the top, and work your way down. Assess the jobs that they have, to the actual work that they do, and the pay that they make. Then cut accordingly. If when you are done there is still not enough money, then you raise the tax.

lol yes, local DMV had to shut down and now every person in that area has to travel about an hour to reach a dmv. And this is one of the highest taxed states in the union.

Only point is that simply saying "vote out the people who raised state taxes" is not a real answer.

Of course there is a ton of waste. Just look at the feds since it affects ALL americans instead of one state. Only a few years ago there were only 1400 "earmarked" pork projects. Now there are 14000, and instead of rolling back tax cuts and trimming those personal earmark pork projects, they're trimming medicare and cutting funding for schools, lmao. And we know this administration has NEVER turned down any spending bill. Horrible governing all over the place.

I cant wait to see how much money is granted for people to study switch grass and wood chips!

                            So move.

Seven states have no state income tax: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Two others, New Hampshire and Tennessee, tax only dividend and interest income.

I'm just saying, to blame Bush for your local and state taxes is silly. Complain about them, not Bush. There is plenty to slam Bush on, but your state taxes ain't one of em.

Are you saying that you wish your state taxes were higher, so the DMV could run? Let's instead rethink the whole DMV, and do something more efficient and cheaper.

HAHAHA, fucking hilarious! Man, you got it backwards here... Inflation means consumer prices rise and, to some extent, the wages follow. So basically the amount of taxable dollars, in absolute numbers, would grow. Therefore the amount of dollars paid in taxes would grow as well. Why the fuck would you increase tax rate just because of inflation rising?!? That would put an even faster spin on inflation... Stick to coding postbots.
